Star Wars Holiday Special And More Coming To Disney Plus With A Catch

It’s the most famous piece of Star Wars content to be almost completely unobtainable: the Star Wars Holiday Special is infamous as a piece of the franchise’s canon that is so unwatchable, George Lucas himself has gone to extraordinary lengths to erase it from public memory. Despite his admirable efforts, however, the special is still well known among hardcore fans.

According to a recent announcement, a very small piece of the Star Wars Holiday Special is going to be made available to the public once again. Disney Plus has recently given a release date for quite a few shows and films that definitely fall into the obscure side of the Star Wars canon and starting on April 2nd, fans will be able to watch some of the less-remembered media from a galaxy far, far away.

It’s especially good news for those who happen to be Ewok fans, as the small cuddly forest dwellers are getting quite the spotlight. Caravan Of Courage: An Ewok Adventure and its sequel, Ewoks: The Battle Of Endor, will be released on Disney Plus. Neither are exactly classic films, but it’s nice to have them preserved at least. The animated Star Wars: Ewoks series will also be released for the truly die-hard Ewok lovers.

Perhaps of more interest to general audiences, though, will be the Star Wars: Clone Wars 2D animated shorts, which aired long before the 3D show premiered and are very popular in the general fanbase. They feature some fun action scenes and truly impressive animation and are a nice little bonus for anyone who can’t get enough of the prequel trilogy.

The big-ticket item is, of course, a small slice of the Star Wars Holiday Special. Disney has not committed to releasing the entire thing, perhaps assuming, reasonably, that even the Star Wars brand won’t make it worth watching in full. Instead, they will be streaming just the animated short titled The Story Of The Faithful Wookiee, which features the first appearance of Boba Fett in the franchise.

This doesn’t seem to suggest that they plan to release the full special, instead just pulling out an interesting piece of Boba Fett lore to help promote the upcoming Boba Fett show, but it is nice to see at least part of the special be rescued from the Lucasfilm vaults. Hopefully, fans will appreciate the animation even more, now that it has been separated from the much longer, and much more confusing, Star Wars Holiday Special.

The Star Wars films are now available on Disney Plus.
