Joker’s ‘We Live In A Society’ Justice League Line Was All Jared Leto

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is finally out on HBO Max and fans are digging through all 4 hours of it, celebrating the launch of Snyder’s long-awaited original vision. In the run-up to release there were all kinds of trailers, teasers, and previews being handed out like candy, and they were devoured by those who just couldn’t wait for the final unveiling just as quickly as they were offered up. When the full film came out, however, there were some minor differences between what was shown and what was in the film.

One of the things many fans latched onto in an early trailer was a particular line by Jared Leto’s Joker. Snyder brought Leto back to film a brand new scene for the character, and make sure Ben Affleck’s Batman could have at least one scene with Leto’s Joker before his version of the DC universe came to a close. During a trailer that featured this confrontation, Joker remarked: “We live in a society where honor is a distant memory.”

To some people, that may not seem like a big deal; sure it’s a decent line, but why all the fuss? Well, as it turns out, the phrase “we live in a society” is actually the tagline for a very popular online meme that typically features the Joker. The Joker begins with “We live in a society,” and then the punchline is usually some strange off-the-wall observation or even some kind of anti-humor line like the phrase “bottom text.”

So, a lot of people who are familiar with the meme were quite amused to see it make its way into an official DC film one way or the other. Unfortunately for those fans, the final version of Zack Snyder’s Justice League did not actually contain the line, and it was only used in marketing materials, leading to some disappointment among the online community.

As it turns out, the use of the meme may have been an intention on Leto’s part, as in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Snyder confessed that the Joker line was Leto’s idea, ad-libbed during the shooting: “We went back and forth a bit, and I’ll give Jared credit for that little ad-lib there, because it was really, really beautiful.” After the Justice League trailer with the line was released, Leto posted the trailer to his timeline with the caption “We live in a society,” possibly indicating an intentional reference to the meme.

While it’s kind of a shame the line didn’t make it into the final cut of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, it’s a fun little wink to a particular subset of Joker fans, and it definitely gave a lot of people a chuckle when it happened. Maybe some more devoted fans can edit it back into the film someday, but until then, it seems we truly do live in a society.
