This may be a tumultuous time to be a PC gamer, given that stocks of new GPUs are in short supply. With talks that graphics cards may not become available until 2022, it’s understandable that people may be interested in just all out buying a prebuilt PC or laptop. This is where Alienware comes into the conversation, particularly as it’s recently unveiled a new gaming laptop which takes inspiration from a beloved 80s film franchise.
Known for its distinctive style, Alienware is set to bring the worlds of PC gaming and sci-fi nostalgia together in harmony as its new product will take cues from Back to the Future. In a recent report, the company has said its m15 R4 and m17 R4 laptops will feature a mechanical keyboard which is inspired by the way the doors open in a DeLorean sports car.
What this means is the ways in which the keys operate through the Cherry MX mechanical switches underneath. In the past, these switches have been anywhere from 12 mm to 18.5 mm. However, these new ones will be ultra low, measuring just 3.5 mm which will operate in the same upward-opening motion that some will associate with the famous movie car. An image of how the switches will look is shown below.
It’s not just the physical manufacturing of them that the company is keen to promote, either. According to the report, users will able to fully optimize the keyboard with fully programmable macros and RGB backlighting which contains up to “16.8 million” colors. Alienware keyboards are arguably some of the most popular ones on the market, stacking alongside other luminaries such as those from Corsair.
Many may think this would come at the detriment to Alienware’s products. However, a spokesperson for the company says the uber low mechanical switches were accomplished without altering the dimensions of its “thinnest notebooks to date.” As a manufacturer of laptops, it’s no stranger to unleashing some really interesting products to the market, such as 2014’s Alienware 14 laptop. What will strike a chord with PC gaming and general hardware enthusiasts is what the DeLorean-inspired Cherry MX mechanical keys will do for the price of the overall machine. It will, apparently, add an additional $150 to the cost, so that’s something that many may wish to consider before they rush out to buy one. However, they will come with a 10th generation Intel processor and Nvidia RTX 3080, so it’s up to the people to decide whether it’s worth the extra price or not.
