‘Black Widow’ Release Plan Will Be Made ‘Last Minute,’ Says Disney CEO

As the first big film of Phase 4 for the MCU, Black Widow has a lot of expectations to live up to. Though the Marvel Studios film has been pushed back quite some time due to the pandemic and was eventually beaten to the punch by WandaVision, there are still countless folks waiting in the wings for the first big-budget superhero flick post-pandemic, giving it a pretty good opportunity to capitalize on the opportunity.

Of course, the pandemic isn’t over quite yet. Although vaccines are continuing to roll out across the U.S. and the world at large, there are still many unvaccinated people left to go, and many areas are still observing some kind of restrictions on public gatherings, meaning folks aren’t out of the woods just yet.

Currently, Black Widow is scheduled for an early May debut and while Disney has maintained that the film will be a theater release, as opposed to digital offerings like the live-action Mulan remake, some have wondered if theater exclusivity is truly the best course of action for the film. During a recent interview with Bloomberg, CEO Bob Chapek admitted that the company is keeping its options open, and isn’t ruling out anything in terms of a release strategy for the film.

As theaters start to open up in the U.S., there are a lot of eyes on them, gauging how people respond and what kind of numbers start showing up to see films in theaters again. While theoretically a lot of cinemas are ready to go, it remains to be seen whether or not audiences are actually willing and eager to start buying tickets. While the release date for Black Widow looms ever closer, this is something that Chapek says the company is keeping a close eye on.

While Disney continues to promote Black Widow as a theater exclusive, Chapek had a more nuanced take when asked directly about the release plans: “We’re going to make the call essentially, probably, at the last minute in terms of how these films come to market – whether it’s Black Widow or any other title.” At this rate, it’s hard to imagine Disney making a last-minute pivot towards a Disney Plus release or simultaneous digital launch, but perhaps a limited theater run or similar is on the table, though it’s difficult to tell as situations continue to change rapidly.

So, it looks like audiences will just have to wait and see what happens. With only a bit over a month until release, it’s hard to imagine Black Widow getting pushed back, but in times like these, stranger things have happened. Fans will just have to cross their fingers and hope that the world looks a little more normal when the film finally rolls around.

Black Widow is scheduled for a May 7th, 2021, release date.
