The next Super Mario Bros. 35 event has been revealed, and it is an important one because it will likely be the final challenge for the special online game. The Super Mario Bros. 35 servers will shut down on April 1, 2021.
Nintendo has been celebrating the 35 year anniversary of Super Mario, but the celebration for Mario is coming to a close. And that means that Super Mario Bros. 35 will soon be shut down for good. While some games, like Super Mario 3D All-Stars, are simply being taken off shelves–meaning those who purchase the games will still be able to play them–Super Mario Bros. 35 will soon be unplayable, which means players will want to take full advantage of this new and final World Count Challenge.
The third and final Super Mario Bros. 35 World Count Challenge will run from March 23 at 12 pm PT through March 29 at 11:59 pm PT. Players will work together to collect 350 million coins, and if that goal is achieved, everyone who participated will receive 350 My Nintendo Platinum Points. The last time a challenge like this was put on the table for fans of the game, Super Mario Bros. 35 players failed to reach the World Count Challenge goal. So hopefully–especially considering this looks to be the last challenge–fans will come through this time.
It is still difficult to fully understand what Nintendo’s goal is with this 35-year celebration of Super Mario. While it makes all the sense to put out collectibles, games, and more of everyone’s favorite plumber, it makes less sense to make a game like Super Mario All-Stars a limited time digital purchase in an online eShop or to have Super Mario Bros. 35 go away entirely after being enjoyed by so many. Perhaps eventually the plan will be revealed by The Big N, but right now it seems more disappointing and disheartening than something celebratory for Nintendo and Mario fans.
Super Mario Bros. 35 is available now for Switch.
