It’s Been Well Over 600 Days Since Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2’s First Trailer

The Legend of Zelda games have always been critical and commercial darlings, ever since the franchise debuted on the NES in 1986. Creator Shigeru Miyamoto perfectly captured the feelings of adventure and a sense of getting lost in the wildness with the first game, and the series has never looked back. Later games would continue to develop upon the premise while simultaneously adding new and innovative mechanics to the mix.

2017’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild was seen as a return to form for the series, one that took a lot of inspiration from the original title. The game had fans instantly clamoring for a sequel and Nintendo quickly replied with the announcement of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 during E3 2019. It’s been over 600 days since its initial announcement, and much hasn’t been revealed since.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild proved to be an influential title for open-world games at large, many of which didn’t incentivize exploration and freedom due to reliance on overused tropes. However, Zelda: Breath of the Wild was built on the foundation of player expression and freedom. After completing the prologue, players are free to go anywhere they like which includes facing off the final boss. Players are expected to fail and learn by way of experimentation and curiosity. Ever since its release, many developers have praised Nintendo for the title and sought to create similar experiences with notable examples being Immortals Fenyx Rising and the upcoming Biomutant.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 was announced to be in development in 2019, which sparked a lot of rumors and speculations. Fans are already excited about all the new things the game would have in store, including hopes of seeing Princess Zelda as a playable character. That being said, Nintendo has remained tight-lipped on most rumors, with almost no information shelled out since the announcement. Recently, however, Nintendo revealed during the latest Direct that more information would be shared before the end of 2021.

It has been speculated that Nintendo may intentionally be hiding information from fans for a big reveal sometime soon. 2021 has brought with itself a bunch of rumors regarding a new Nintendo Super Switch. It isn’t confirmed yet, but a recent Samsung statement seems to give more wind to such rumors, and Nintendo’s targeted hardware sales for the next seem to line up pretty well. If there’s a chance that an updated Switch is in development, it could make for the perfect moment regarding a Zelda release.

Nintendo’s reliance on its darling franchises to drive its console sales is well known and isn’t something to be frowned upon. The Switch launched with Zelda: Breath of the Wild and it makes sense to release the sequel along with an updated console. The first game showcased the potential of the relatively weaker handheld, and the sequel could walk the same road. It’s speculated that it could be a Nintendo Super Switch exclusive, and there could be some truth behind that.

However, Nintendo’s statements regarding the game being in development for the Switch makes such a prospect unlikely. That being said, it could prove for an interesting comparison between the consoles with the rumored Super Switch being the superior way to play the game featuring better visual fidelity and potentially better performance as well.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2 is in development for Nintendo Switch.
