A few days ago, Ramone Russell, Brand Strategist and Product Development Communicator at PlayStation, sat down to field fans’ questions about the upcoming changes in MLB The Show 21. During the Q&A, fans were promised that fielding would be entirely overhauled in the upcoming game, and now, a gameplay video of MLB The Show 21 has been released to cover those aforementioned changes.
In the latest video, Chris Gill, Gameplay Director, narrowed in the team’s focus on eliminating problems from the previous game. As mentioned during the MLB The Show 21 hitting and fielding showcase, fans had noticed a decided difficulty while making plays near the wall. Specifically, fans were struggling with user-controlled players making deep outfield plays. To that end, they aimed to make controls more intuitive so that any mistakes during the game were a result of genuine errors made by a player, not a problem within the game itself.
With a wave of new fans coming with MLB The Show 21 bringing Xbox players in, the team also wanted to hone-in on the onboarding procedure within the game. The development team felt that the issues from last year’s game stemmed not only from problematic mechanics within the game itself but also from a lack of proper introduction to the game’s main features.
Also, with that in mind, the development team added a whole slew of new indicators that will be applied by default to new players including a “route to ball indicator,” “catch ball indicator,” “base for play indicator,” and many more. But the team recognized the issue with tailoring the game completely with new players in mind, and so they added a never-seen-before depth of customization in MLB The Show 21, allowing players to bring the game in line with their needs.
MLB The Show 21 will release April 20 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
