10 Best Sci-Fi MMOs With Awesome Settings | Game Rant

As much as we love the western interpretation of fantasy, with dragons, knights, wizards, and other medieval features, the aesthetic does get old after a while. Thanks to a number of creative game developers and talented graphic designers, there are a lot of alternatives out there when you get tired of the classic motifs. Science fiction aficionados have a lot to choose from in this category, making it possible for classic fantasy to get some real competition in the last couple of years.

Science fiction can take a lot of different forms, just like other counterparts in the genre, and isn’t limited to narrow categories like space travel or playable robot characters.  The massively multiplayer online (MMO) gaming genre has a distinct advantage in the respect that they can create an expansive gaming universe that considers the needs and desires of a whole community.

10 Warframe

Warframe touches on a few different genres. It’s an MMO, a first-person shooter (FPS), and includes the same kind of character customization that you would find in RPG games. It mixes science fiction with mythical tropes.

The gameplay focuses on a race of ancient warriors known as the Tenno, who inhabit a vast universe that consists of different planets and races, including their mortal enemies, the Grineer and the Corpus. The setting of Warframe not only touches on several different races, planets, and environments but also includes the Tenno warriors’ special mechanical suits and custom weapons.

9 Star Wars: The Old Republic

Even if you’re not into video games or movies generally, you have some idea of what the setting of Star Wars is like just because it’s so everpresent in pop culture. SWtOR uses the vast systems of this expansive pop culture franchise as its setting, and that means players can explore and level in several unique settings on various planets. This game relies on the same RPG, leveling framework, and game mechanics as certain popular fantasy RPGs, which is one of the reasons it’s one of the few that can compete on the same level as its fantasy-themed contemporaries when it comes to subscriptions and world-building.

8 Eve Online

Eve Online has what’s known as a persistent MMO world, which means it continues to evolve even if no players are interacting with it. That should give you an idea of how expansive and compelling the setting for this unique MMO really is.

The game is less about controlling individual players and more about building massive business conglomerates and industrial empires, but that’s not to say that combat isn’t involved. Eve Online hosted the now infamous battle, The Bloodbath of B-R5RB, which involved thousands of players and lasted almost a full day.

7 Perpetuum

Perpetuum also takes place in a persistent MMO environment, but the gameplay is focused on what happens on the ground as much as in space, and there are more individual customization options available, similar to conventional MMOs. The game is set in the year 2208, after humanity has discovered both space flight and wormholes, allowing inter-planetary travel. Players can explore the alien world of Nia, an interesting mix of savage wilderness and advanced technology while customizing their fighting robots to subjugate the planet and harvest its resources.

6 Anarchy Online

Released by Norwegian company Funcom in 2001, Anarchy Online could be one of the oldest entries in the MMO genre that’s still playable and evolving. It was one of the first MMORPGs ever, never mind one of the first to use a science fiction aesthetic. The setting is Rubi-Ka, a fictional planet filled with hostile creatures and dangerous environments, along with plenty of exotic demons and ancient ruins to make the surroundings even more deadly and interesting. The main character is a colonist and their main objective is to collect a valuable resource known as Notum.

5 Entropia Universe

Produced by the Swedish software company MindArk and released in 2003, Entopia Online is an MMO that focuses on the FPS model when it comes to gameplay. It uses the micropayment business model, which assigns a real-life monetary value to in-game items. The news cycle gets distracted by the space station that sold for over $300,000 and forgets about the numerous places that make up the setting.

The universe of Entropia Online is comprised of six diverse planets, and there’s also come action that happens in space. The environments of both were developed by different teams of programmers and designers, and each has a different theme. ROCKtropia, for example, is a planet dedicated to music and popular culture.

4 Destiny 2

A mix of fantasy tropes and science fiction aesthetic known as “mythic science fiction” Destiny 2 takes place in a dystopian future. Players take on the role of a Guardian, a protector of earth’s last safe city and a master of certain elemental powers. The various expansions that have been released since the game appeared in 2017 continue the storyline, which consists primarily of new quests, along with adding new settings to discover and explore. Like the first game, Destiny 2 has a reputation for impressive long views and outdoor settings, but it also has a variety of dungeons and raids to enjoy.

2 Secret World Legends

Previously known as The Secret World, this game was released under the title Secret World Legends in 2017. The setting is a modern Earth that’s under attack from occult forces inspired by the work of HP Lovecraft, and the setting matches the unique modern horror theme.

Explore London infected with zombies or a quarantined Tokyo before fighting immortal beings in the Egyptian desert or the New England coastline. Travel using the world tree Yggdrasil, one of many locations and features in the game taken from human folklore.

1 DC Universe Online

This is an action-combat MMORPG that’s set, as the name suggests, in the world of DC Comics. In this case, that’s the near future on Earth, and the world has become a battleground between heroes and villains.

This overlaps into the fantasy genre, but considering the contribution modern settings, weapons, and technology make up the immersion factor, the science fiction genre is at least a whole contributing factor. Characters start by escaping from an alien spaceship, which helps set the sci-fi tone and progress through locations on earth as well as exploring space.
