10 Lady Maria’s Cut Content

Lady Maria’s introduction in the game is very well done. It makes Lady Maria more intriguing as a character, and her protective nature befits how she is built up throughout the DLC.

At one point in time, however, Lady Maria’s introduction was intended to be different. Instead of approaching a corpse to trigger the Lady Maria boss fight, the player would have been allowed to engage her in conversation first. They’ll then kill her where she sits, or leave her and have Simon kill her. The rest then follows what happens in the final cut.

9 Lady Maria Is Either A Knight Of Cainhurst Or Adores Them

The knights of Cainhurst are the warriors of the land who protect it against beasts and other potential threats. According to their attire set, the knights of Cainhurts are as royal as they are mighty. Interestingly, Lady Maria’s attire set closely resembles that of the Knight’s Set worn by the knights of Cainhurst.

Whether Lady Maria was a knight herself or she just found them inspirational is unknown. She also wields the Evelyn, a pistol said to be used by Cainhurst knights.

Lady Maria is said to have taken a particular liking for lumenflowers. She wears a lumenflower brooch on her neck. Interestingly, this same brooch is also present in the Doll’s attire. There is also a lumenflower garden in the Research Hall, a place thought to be have been run by Lady Maria herself.

7 Lady Maria’s Name Represents Her Arc

The world of Bloodborne is insanely dark and depressing. It’s something both casual players and heavy lore-diggers will attest to. It is almost unheard of for a character in Bloodborne to have a happy ending. Like so many others, Lady Maria also suffered a very tragic fate.

Even Lady Maria’s name is a representation of her story. Maria, according to its Latin origins, roughly stands for “sea” or “bitterness.” With this in mind, Lady Maria’s name can mean “sea of bitterness,” which is exactly her as a character after the events of the Fishing Hamlet massacre.

6 Lady Maria’s OST Tells Her Downfall

There are so many reasons to love Bloodborne. One among the many is the game’s soundtrack. Each boss in the game comes with their own original soundtrack, and Lady Maria’s is arguably one of the best in the game.

Aside from being the right blend of atmospheric and epic, Lady Maria’s OST’s lyrics also tell the story of her downfall. The lyrics of the song are in Latin. Translated into English, it’s quickly understood that the song tells the story of a hunter who becomes manipulated into performing horrible acts of violence.

5 Why Lady Maria Despises Blood Magic

Lady Maria is a relative of Queen Annalise, the ruler of Cainhurst and Queen of the Vilebloods. Citizens of Cainhurst have the innate ability to use blood magic. Lady Maria, on the other hand, despises this practice, which is why she prefers the Rakuyo as it utilizes skill and dexterity instead of blood.

It is not fully revealed why Lady Maria despises the use of blood, but it may have something to do with the deteriorating of a person’s essence each time they make use of this power. Despite this, in a desperate attempt to stop the player from reaching the Fishing Hamlet, she gives in to her power and uses it against the player.

4 Lady Maria And The Doll

It’s almost common knowledge at this point within Bloodborne’s community that the Doll in Hunter’s Dream is modeled after Lady Maria. This was done by the Moon Presence at the request of Gehrman, who lost his precious student.

However, the similarities between Lady Maria and the Doll go beyond physical appearances. Aside from being a skilled hunter, Lady Maria was also the caretaker at the Research Hall. She provided nourishment and care to her patients, similar to how the Doll strengthens the hunters in Hunter’s Dream.

3 Lady Maria’s Attempt At Redemption

The Fishing Hamlet massacre was orchestrated by Master Willem, but those who personally performed the act were the hunters of Byrgenwerth. Among them was Lady Maria. Disgusted by everything that happened, Lady Maria threw her Rakuyo down a well, ending her life as a hunter.

It was here that Lady Maria dedicated her life as a caretaker, almost as if doing it as an act of redemption. However, this too proved fruitless. Failed experiments, suffering patients, mania, and death led to Lady Maria finally succumbing to the darkness. She ends her own life in the Astral Clocktower, where the nightmare then takes her to guard the hamlet she once violated.

2 The Astral Clocktower’s Caryll Runes

Lady Maria’s final resting place, and her boss arena is the Astral Clocktower. Like Lady Maria, this very location also holds a couple of interesting details. Surrounding the massive clock itself are runes and symbols. Upon closer inspection, these runes appear to be none other than Caryll Runes.

After the player defeats Lady Maria, they can activate the clock to open a path to the Fishing Hamlet. Interestingly, the clock’s hands point towards the Deep Sea Rune. It is unknown if Lady Maria etched these runes herself or if it was the work of a Great One.

1 Lady Maria Has Unique Animations

The player will meet a handful of hostile hunters as they progress through the game. They’ll have the same abilities the player does, like being able to parry and do visceral attacks. All of the hunter enemies in the game have the same attack animations when doing a visceral attack—all except Lady Maria.

Lady Maria’s visceral attack animation feels almost gentle. After stabbing her arm in the player’s body, she’ll get close, almost as if to whisper in their ear, before pulling away. Lady Maria is the only character in the game who has this animation.
