Hand cannons are the meta weapons in Destiny 2 Beyond Light. Players can glean that fact by playing any ranked PVP mode. Nearly every kill on the ticker will be with a hand cannon. The weapons have the benefit of being extremely accurate and having high headshot damage values.
Hand cannons are also great peek weapons, as guardians can seek cover between shots. There are a lot of good hand cannons to use in Destiny 2, but only a handful that are elite. Below are the top tier hand cannons to use in PVP ranked from worst to best.
10 Nation Of Beasts
Nation of Beasts is a 140 rpm arcane cannon that can be acquired from the Last Wish raid. While it is probably better at PVE than PVP, the gun is still viable on smaller maps. The current meta is 120 rpm cannons, but players can down enemies quickly at close ranges with the Nation of Beasts. It might not be as good as the cannons at the bottom of this list, but it is by far the best looking hand cannon.
9 Ace Of Spades
The old reliable hand cannon used to be a two tap annihilator in PVP. It was so dominant that Bungie nerfed the weapon twice. Even after the nerfs, the hand cannon is still one of the better cannons in the game. Getting kills with Ace of Spades increases weapon damage with each kill players get without dying. With 13 rounds and 140 rpm fire rate, the hand cannon will be effective in any mode.
8 The Last Word
Guardians that like to play at a fast pace in PVP will love using the Last Word. Gamers will feel like a cowboy with a six shooter using the gun, which is only effective at close range. If players hit their shots, they can down opponents in half a second. The gun is unique, but only useful at point blank range. Gamers will also not be able to aim down sights with the gun, and learning to hip fire it can take a few matches. Despite its niche role, The Last Word is a good gun to use in certain situations.
7 Sturm
The Sturm hand cannon is one of the hardest hitting hand cannons in the game with 90 damage to the chest and 108 damage to the head. Players can unlock the gun by completing a season one quest. The weapon has a fire rate of 120 rpm, which is more than enough for a 92 impact gun. Guardians will have the most success when pairing the Sturm with with a sniper or a shotgun. On larger maps the weapon can be players’ short to medium range option and on smaller maps the hand cannon can be used as a medium to long range option. Because the weapon is an exotic, players will not be able to get favorable rolls for the gun. For that reason, the Sturm is not a top three hand cannon in Destiny 2.
6 Sunshot
The Sunshot is another viable weapon that has been in Destiny 2 since 2017. It is actually the only 150rpm hand cannon left in the game after Bungie’s numerous changes to the weapon class. Few players still use the gun, but it is definitely viable in the current meta. With good damage values and the highest fire rate among hand cannons, the Sunshot will eviscerate opponents at medium ranges. All of the Destiny players who have been playing the game since launch need to pull this weapon out and try it in the Crucible.
5 Lumina
While the Lumina has all of the important stats for a hand cannon, the gun’s ability makes it one of the best to use in PVP. Gamers can actually heal their teammates by shooting them with noble rounds. The gun will not only heal teammates, but give them a 20% damage buff for ten seconds. Up to this point there is no other weapon in Destiny 2 with a support function like the Lumina. For that reason, it is a top ten hand cannon in Destiny 2. Guardians will have to complete a lengthy questline to get it, however.
4 Dire Promise
Dire Promise has been one of the best hand cannons for several seasons in Destiny 2. The weapon has a 140 rpm fire rate with 92 aim assist. On controller, the hand cannon is incredibly easy to use and one of the best beginner guns in the game. Dire Promise also has a lightweight frame which helps with handling and makes weapon swap lightning fast. Guardians should use the hand cannon on small maps where players can take advantage of its handling and aim assist. On bigger maps, 140 rpm hand cannons are not as useful because they have more visual recoil. At range, gamers will have to wait for the reticle to re-center, which essentially makes the increased fire rate useless.
3 Thorn
Bungie nerfed the Thorn several months ago by making it a 140 rpm hand cannon. However, if used correctly, it feels even better than before. One of the benefits of using the hand cannon is the Soul Devourer perk. After killing enemies and absorbing their souls, the gun will deal extra burn damage after each shot. As a result, players will get a few extra kills with the hand cannon. Guardians should ease up on the trigger and focus on hitting shots now that the cannon fires slightly faster.
2 Steady Hand
The legendary hand cannon is a 120rpm gun that can be acquired through the Iron Banner. After Bungie removed True Prophecy, Steady Hand was added to replace it. With range, impact, and aim assist all on the higher side, gamers of all skill levels will be able to use the weapon well. However, its small magazine and sub par perks prevent the weapon from making the top spot on this list.
1 True Prophecy
Guardians can no longer acquire the True Prophecy, but those that have the weapon in their collection can wield the best hand cannon in the game. The weapon has all of the same attributes as the Steady Hand, but with better perks and a larger clip size. Guardians will see this hand cannon in almost every PVP match, and for good reason. True Prophecy is accurate, easy to use, and deals a ton of damage. Players that do not have the gun will have to settle for the Steady Hand.
