Fans of HBO’s fantasy series Game of Thrones can rejoice because it sounds like the network is eager to return to the brutal world of Westeros in the near future. HBO is reportedly developing three more prequel shows that include 9 Voyages, a.k.a. Sea Snake, Flea Bottom, and 10,000 Ships.
HBO’s acclaimed fantasy series Game of Thrones came to a fiery end in 2019 after eight epic seasons. The live-action adaptation of George R.R. Martins’s fantasy novel series A Song of Ice and Fire was a critical darling, winning dozens of awards, and was likely one of the most popular shows of its time. Despite the final season receiving mixed reviews, Game of Thrones will likely be remembered as one of the biggest and most influential TV dramas of the 21st century, along with other ‘golden age’ shows like The Sopranos, Breaking Bad and Mad Men.
Even though Game of Thrones has wrapped, HBO looks to be pursuing further projects that will bring audiences back to the cutthroat fantasy world. The network is already working on a spin-off about the rise and fall of House Targaryen in the prequel series titled House of the Dragon, and now there appears to be three more projects in development, according to Deadline.
9 Voyages, aka Sea Snake, is the first of these other spin-offs and is being developed by Bruno Heller, the creator of the HBO series Rome who also helped develop The Mentalist on CBS and the DC Comics series Gotham. Martin is also reportedly involved in the development of the series. The 9 Voyages refers to the epic voyages made aboard the ship The Sea Snake by Lord Corlys Velaryon, a character who is also set to appear in House of the Dragon. HBO’s 9 Voyages is the only one of these three series to currently have a creative team attached, while the other two are still being explored by the network.
The second series is set in Flea Bottom, the poorest district in King’s Landing, which appeared multiple times in Game of Thrones. It’s described as “a maze-like warren of narrow streets and dark alleys filled with tanneries, brothels, and alehouses.” The third spin-off, 10,000 Ships, is based on the journey made by the warrior queen Princess Nymeria from Essos to Dorne around 1,000 years before the events depicted in the A Song of Ice and Fire novels.
HBO is also apparently eyeing an adaptation of Martin’s Tales of Dunk & Egg novella and a potential animated Game of Thrones series set for at HBO Max. While House of the Dragon is set to premiere sometime in 2022, the other shows have yet to be officially moved into production.
Game of Thrones is now available on HBO Max.
