How Dark Souls 3 Cinders Mod Completely Changes the Game

Dark Souls 3 certainly has no shortage of mods available to change up the experience. From randomizers to challenges to turning the game into something akin to Pokemon, the Souls modding community has been keeping themselves busy for years now. One of the most popular options is Cinders, a massive overhaul that essentially restructures Dark Souls 3 from the ground up.

The mod received its 1.92 update last month, but it was originally uploaded by modder Xylozi back in the simpler times of January 2019. Since then, it’s enjoyed over 500,000 total downloads and upwards of 2 million views over on the Nexus Mods page for Dark Souls 3It tackles an astonishing amount of things, bringing back cut content found in the game files and changing the way many of the game’s systems work together.

The changes to the magic system are arguably some of the biggest in the mod. In Dark Souls 3, FP (or Focus Points) is used to cast spells, but there are only a handful of ways to regenerate it. Cinders makes FP auto-regenerating, immediately changing the nature and challenge of magic builds with a single, simple tweak. By bringing FP more in line with something like melee-focused builds’ Stamina, a stat designed to foster strategy and experimentation rather than a plain restriction, Cinders quickly makes clear its intent to encourage players to try out new things and find new ways to bring down Dark Souls 3‘s infamously challenging bosses.

The changes to the magic system are just the tip of the iceberg, however. The game’s opening choice of ten classes has been expanded to a whopping 29, allowing for some profoundly different experiences of the first few hours, and several quality-of-life changes have been made, including changing the placement of some bonfires and items and introducing new tools to warp to different areas. Speaking of items, a veritable treasure trove of weapons, armor and rings have been added, and item descriptions have been made clearer to allow for more informed decisions when choosing what gear to don.

The adjustments aren’t for everyone, though: to keep the difficulty of the game in line with many of the changes made, a lot of the enemies and bosses have been buffed and will still offer a significant challenge even when decked out with all the new gear. Tweaks to the stamina system have also elicited frustration in some players who found themselves with nothing left in the tank after rolling out of the way of an attack.

Ultimately, Cinders is a mod that serves to reignite the sense of curiosity and excitement of discovering the world of Lothric, even in veteran players. With its sweeping changes to the game’s systems as well as more subtle ones to the progression and flow of the game, even those who have spent hundreds of hours in Dark Souls 3 should find something new and interesting here. And even if this mod isn’t everybody’s cup of tea, there’s always rock lizard soccer.

Dark Souls 3 is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
