Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 6 is well under way, and players everywhere are dropping into matches to hunt and scavenge for materials, craft Primal and Mechanical weapons, and most importantly, eliminate each other. The new season kicked off just last week, also introducing players to a brand new edition of the Battle Pass featuring crossovers with Tomb Raider and Teen Titans to the excitement of fans.
For the most part, Fortnite‘s newest season seems to have been well-received by fans, despite some occasional complaints about the balance of weapons like the newly craftable Primal Shotgun. Since the game manages to maintain such a massive regular player base, there are bound to be some bug discoveries here and there. However, Season 6 has potentially brought some players one of the most detrimental bugs to the game yet.
With such a massive map, Fortnite uses the “Storm” to draw players to increasingly smaller sections of the map, as getting caught in the Storm will cause them to gradually lose health. However, many players on some versions of the game have noticed that it has become nearly impossible to see anything while inside of it, either making it difficult for them to make it back to the safe part of the map, or making it hard to see opponents during fights in the Storm.
It seems like this bug is persistent on nearly every version of Fortnite at the moment, though Reddit user EzBugatti99 showed that PC players can use a pseudo-workaround for the issue by turning on the game’s “performance mode.” This essentially completely removes the effect of the Storm in-game, potentially giving some PC players in performance mode an unfair advantage against others in the Storm. Of course, Fortnite‘s massive player base is not limited to the PC platform, so many trying to play the game on consoles may not even have the ability to access a performance mode. One Reddit user explained, “My first match of the season ended when I hit someone for like 140 as the Storm rolled in and then I couldn’t see them to even try hitting them again and they just destroyed me.”
Even though the issue at hand is a new bug affecting the Storm, it has also raised quite a bit of conversation about the PC version’s performance mode, with many saying that console players shouldn’t be placed into lobbies with PC players due to unfair advantages. While cross-play was a highly requested feature when Fortnite was first released, it seems that now it may prove to be an issue for some.
It’s worth noting that a member of the Fortnite dev team commented on the Reddit post, stating that they’ll discuss the issue with other developers. Despite all this, many players have continued to enjoy the game’s newest season, with some even finding unique uses for the newly added wildlife, like quickly traveling across the map.
Fortnite is currently available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
