Fans keeping up with all the promo trailers for the upcoming MLB The Show 21 know that information is usually delivered by the humorous puppet pals Coach and Fernando Tatis Jr. While they provide some limited comedy, fans eager to get their hands on the game may just want to see some gameplay. The title’s last developer video demonstrated PS5 gameplay for MLB The Show 21, specifically diving into the improved user controls for fielding a ball. Today’s video is all gameplay at 4K, 60 fps, and it just looks good.
Next-gen consoles have the power to run games at more consistent frame rates with better resolution, and MLB The Show 21 will be no exception. Now that MLB The Show 21 has welcomed Xbox players into the family, PS5 and Xbox Series X owners will have a chance at matching the performance shown off in this video. Today’s trailer covers still shots and all kinds of baseball action, so fans can see what’s possible when they get ready to play some ball.
Many gamers love to see accurate facial reconstruction with superior technology, especially in sports games, and MLB The Show 21 does a decent job at 4K 60 FPS. While it’s not exact, it still looks realistic, and the most noticeable improvements are in skin texture and eye movement. It’s also good to see fairly realistic movements from players when they aren’t doing typical baseball actions, like when performing a particular celebration dance.
But even at 4K 60 FPS, there are still a few things to break immersion. Some of the contact physics, like when the ball meets the bat, are still a little stiff. Mouth movements are hit and miss. It’s also important to remember that this footage is cut to be cinematic and show off the best game moments, and there’s no guarantee a gamer will be able to achieve this look even if they have a PS5 or Xbox Series X.
The end of the video also gives another tease at the new next-gen exclusive Stadium Creator feature in MLB The Show 21, which among other things allows gamers to put spaceships outside their stadiums. MLB The Show 21 is now less than month away from launch, so players won’t have to wait too much longer to experiment with it.
MLB The Show 21 will release April 20 on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
