Zack Snyder Addresses Henry Cavill’s Weird Upper Lip In Original Justice League Cut

Almost four years after its theatrical cut, Zack Snyder’s Justice League finally released last week on HBO Max after a long, tumultuous journey. One thing that fans noticed immediately was the lack of a digital shave on Henry Cavill’s Superman. For years, the CGI removal of Cavill’s mustache has been a reason for DC fans to mock 2017’s Justice League and it seems like Snyder has been aware of it all along.

While he hasn’t watched the theatrical cut of the film, Snyder admitted in an interview with MTV News that he has seen memes of Superman, which fans will know have been doing the rounds on social media for years. While fans have been criticizing the poorly removed mustache for years, Snyder didn’t want it to be how they remembered Cavill’s potentially final appearance as Superman.

“It was funny because part of me is happy that we were able to have that not be the total legacy of the hard work that he had done over the last ten years…,” Snyder is heard saying in the interview. Henry Cavill first appeared as Superman in 2013’s Man of Steel, and instantly shot to fame, with many fans believing he was the best fit for the role. Even though his portrayal of the Last Son of Krypton gained immense love from DC fans, and Cavill confirming that he would like to return to the role, there has been no confirmation on a sequel to his standalone film.

After Snyder’s sudden departure from Justice League due to a personal tragedy, Joss Whedon was brought on to lead the project. The film underwent several reshoots, to the tune of $25 million, which included Cavill’s return to the sets. However, the actor had already begun shooting for Mission: Impossible – Fallout, where he was seen playing the mustached-villain August Walker. Since his contract with Paramount Pictures didn’t allow him to shave, the Justice League reshoots featured a mustached-Superman in the traditional red and blue colors. The mustache was later digitally removed, but at the cost of Cavill’s Superman becoming a viral meme.

Snyder’s version of Justice League did not have the same issue, as the director refused to use any of the footage shot by Whedon. The Snyder Cut featured a few additional Superman scenes, which had been cut from the theatrical cut. Fans finally got to see one of the most powerful DC superheroes wear the famous black suit from the comics after he is resurrected. Apart from the fact that the Snyder Cut has a lot to offer in comparison to its predecessor, fans can celebrate that Henry Cavill’s digitally altered face will not be featured in the four-hour cut.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is now streaming on HBO Max.
