Zack Snyder is certainly a director of monochromatic sensibilities and he has always had a particular fondness for black and white as an aesthetic, often showcasing his work without color in various teaser images. During the hype cycle for Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the director often remarked that he was a big fan of a black and white cut of the film, teasing a second release of the film which has been trending under the name Justice is Gray.
Recently, a Twitch streamer by the name MANvsGame hosted a charity live stream in order to raise money for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. Snyder has also been heavily involved in the organization’s fundraising efforts and made a guest appearance on this stream, in particular, along with Snyder Cut actor Joe Manganiello.
As a special treat for those who tuned in, the team unveiled a sneak preview of the Justice is Gray version of Justice League, showcasing one scene for the new version of the film. The scene shown off features Ben Affleck’s Bruce Wayne and Jeremy Irons’ Alfred discussing their plan to resurrect Superman using the Motherboxes, and will no doubt be familiar for those who recently watched the Snyder Cut on HBO Max.
While this scene, in particular, is still seen in the current version of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, reports have gone around suggesting that the Justice is Gray cut of the film may have alternate scenes, including a different version of the confrontation between Batman and Jared Leto’s Joker. This has not been directly confirmed, but the Snyder Cut Twitter account has announced that the black and white version of the film will hit HBO Max “soon.”
It’s certainly been a wild ride for fans of the DC film universe. From the theatrical cut of Justice League‘s dismal reception all the way to the release of Zack Snyder’s Justice League, no one can say that the fans haven’t been invested in Snyder’s vision for the superhero team-up. Now with one, presumably final, version of the film headed for streaming, the book seems set to close for good on Snyder’s DC universe.
Whatever happens, hopefully, the Justice is Gray cut is warmly received, and fans get all they asked for and more out of the whole release. If anything is for certain, it’s that Snyder has certainly realized his vision, right down to the color-grading.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is now available on HBO Max.
