‘Batwoman’ Showrunner Explains That Big Reveal About Kate Kane

Sunday’s bombshell episode of Batwoman finally shed some light on the Kate Kane situation, and it’s probably not what some fans were expecting. But it turns out anyone who might have been worried that it would shift the newfound focus of the show once again might be able to rest easy after all. Spoilers for the March 21st episode of Batwoman follow.

Batwoman showrunner Caroline Dries spoke about the big reveal, saying it was planned from the initial conception stages for season 2. But while they had always intended to bring back Kate and not just kill her off (with even Ruby Rose saying she’d be willing to return to the character one day), Dries emphasized that even now, the priority is developing the character and arc of the new Batwoman, Ryan Wilder (Javicia Leslie). That priority still holds true even as the series officially confirms a new actress will be portraying Kate once she finally shows up again, at least without all those Hush-style bandages.

Of course, the big reveal was that Kate is not only still alive, but appears to be badly disfigured following the plane crash that resulted in her disappearance. This freed up the series to cast someone new in the role now that Rose will no longer play Batwoman, and that new face is none other than British actress Wallis Day, best known for her work on the Syfy series Krypton. “We looked back at what our options were, and to me, this seemed like the most organic option to tell in this space we had for our season 2 launch,” Dries said, explaining the decision.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Dries also addressed how this will affect Ryan’s character and story arc going forward. Reintroducing Kate now, especially after the show’s characters have been told she’s dead, will definitely shake things up for the woman who has finally begun to feel more comfortable in the batsuit. After all, it’s not like they’ll put her on the sidelines now after focusing on making sure the Batwoman outfit emphasizes her Blackness. “Ryan will go through her own journey of learning to believe in herself,” Dries teased, “and that’s really something we focus on towards the latter part of season 2.”

Season 2 of Batwoman has definitely taken fans for an unexpected ride, and many are likely wary of where things could go. Rose’s abrupt departure from the show left the story with lots of dangling threads, and the rush to tie off some and try to continue others has resulted in some rather unusual decisions. Elements like removing Tommy Elliot from the show almost right after he appeared to be introduced as a substantial villain gave the season a rather abrupt feel at times, and other moments such as Ryan’s precious house plant turning out to be one of criminal queen Safiyah’s rare restorative “desert rose” flowers contribute to that as well.

That’s not to say it’s been miss after miss. Oddly enough, the disappearance of Kate has opened the door for some incredible character work and development for her sister Alice (Rachel Skarsten), and Leslie has already established Ryan as a nuanced and capable Batwoman even in the short time she’s been on the show. It’s clear there’s been some action on the cutting room floor due to the last-minute cast change, but at the moment, things look promising for the future of Batwoman.
