Media Molecule’s Dreams is possibly one of the most ambitious titles available for purchase on PlayStation. Though the studio is best known for its work on the first three entries in the LittleBigPlanet series, the studio developed the PS Vita Tearaway, then moved on to develop Dreams over five years.
Though Dreams does not have the most expansive player base, the player base that is there is committed and often creates some fantastic things within the game. Now, one of the lead designers over at Media Molecule, John Beech, is joining in on the community creation of Dreams by showcasing an incredible screenshot of a carpet tile made in Dreams, which was created without the use of any polygons.
To be more specific, Beech is the senior principal designer at Media Molecule. As such, it’s no wonder that Beech was able to create something so impressive with the Dreams engine. That being said, Beech did shed some light on how he was able to make the in-game carpet look so realistic, with an almost tangible “fuzziness” to it. According to Beech, the effect was achieved thanks to Dreams‘ use of “flecks” to render objects, which basically looks like very small paint splatters.
Essentially, Beech used these flecks to his advantage when creating the carpet tiles. However, Beech also expertly uses shadows, depth of field, and even detailing things such as tiny hairs and dust to give the screenshot even more realism. It’s a stunning build, to say the least. Dreams players have made some incredible pieces of art, including a full-on action title called MODI: Son of Thor, and it’s always a treat to see what fascinating projects the community comes up with next.
Though Dreams got off to a fairly rough start when it released in February 2020, the tools available to players were well realized. As such, Dreams achieved a high Metacritic score of 89, with many critics praising the freedom with which it allows players to create and share. In many ways, Dreams is essentially a compact game development kit built inside a game itself. For that reason alone, it’s one of PS4’s most noteworthy titles.
Seeing as Dreams recently celebrated its first anniversary, there very well may be a small surge in new players joining the community surrounding Dreams. Though the tools inside Dreams may be intimidating to new players, with a bit of time and dedication they will be able to create some impressive builds just like Beech’s playroom. Hopefully, players are able to use Beech’s incredible carpet tile render and build as inspiration for some more amazing Dreams creations in the future.
