Sony and Microsoft both have programs to provide players with free games. Subscribers of PlayStation Plus can avail themselves of free games every month and for some fans, the PlayStation Plus offers have only been getting better as time goes on. Sony has been offering more AAA and recent games, which is a move welcomed by gamers all over. Microsoft has the Xbox Games with Gold program and like the PlayStation Plus service, provides players with free titles every month. Other than these two long-running services, both Sony and Microsoft have been giving back to gamers more than ever.
Gaming in 2021 is certainly different than years past. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people socialize, and gaming has become a major outlet on a global level. While gamer’s habits have changed, so too have the services offered by major gaming companies. There are more digital storefronts and services offered by gaming companies that present various means of acquiring games. In addition to the likes of the Epic Games Store offering free games to players, companies like Sony and Microsoft have been doing the same in their own ways.
One of the major programs where players can access free games is the PlayStation Play at Home initiative. This program launched in 2020 and has already seen the likes of Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection and Ratchet and Clank being offered for free, with no PlayStation Plus subscription required. Throughout March and April 2021, gamers will be able to grab an unprecedented 10 free games, including Horizon Zero Dawn, Subnautica, and The Witness. This is a great selection for PlayStation gamers that includes independent and AAA games. While some players may already own a few of these games, especially Horizon Zero Dawn, this could be a great way for players to fill out their collections.
While there isn’t an exactly comparable Microsoft program like the Play at Home initiative, Xbox Game Pass has proven to be excellent value for gamers, and it has been enhanced with Microsoft’s acquisition of Bethesda. Over 20 Bethesda games are now available on Xbox Game Pass, in addition to the hundreds of other titles available on the service. While it’s not free to access the titles on Xbox Game Pass, the price is widely considered to be meager compared to the return on investment.
Though Sony and Microsoft use different methods, gamers have more avenues to access free games than ever before. The Play at Home initiative gives gamers a chance to get a mix of games, and new games are being added to Xbox Game Pass consistently. Regardless of the chosen platform, gamers have more options than ever, and it’s a great time for it too.
It’s possibly the best time for gamers to have access to so many avenues for free games. On a global scale, the COVID-19 pandemic is continuing to affect people’s livelihoods and in-person events are difficult to organize. Perhaps unsurprisingly, gaming time has been up since the pandemic hit making this an ideal time for companies like Sony and Microsoft to offer options for free games. With more people gaming, many may be new to gaming in general, and having access to volumes of free games could potentially make the transition into the pastime easier. Some of these titles might already be a part of the libraries of many gamers, but for those who are new to it or simply don’t have the free games on offer, this is great timing.
Free game offerings could be likely to continue from both Sony and Microsoft. Sony has already confirmed that its Play at Home initiative will run until at least June 2021, meaning that there are several more months of free games on the way for PlayStation owners. Xbox Game Pass is considered to be highly successful, so it’s expected that Microsoft will continue adding to its digital service. While the pandemic continues to affect the world, both companies may continue to go the extra mile to provide gamers with free titles. There is no hard evidence to suggest this is the case, but at least for Sony, it does follow a pattern. The Play at Home program ran in 2020 originally and the company brought it back this year, as the health crisis has continued. By this logic, Sony could bring its program back at a later point.
In between the continually increasing value of Xbox Game Pass and the new games being put forward by Sony, gamers have been able to expand their libraries with a mix of titles that some might not have been able to access otherwise. The timing of both companies’ efforts has been great for gamers globally, considering the universal uptick in gaming as a whole while people are staying at home more. Gamers are certainly on the winning side at the moment, regardless of any platform of choice.
