The original God of War has hit a monumental anniversary today. One of the most beloved hack and slash action-adventure games is now sixteen years old, as it released way back on May 22, 2005, on the PlayStation 2. Many fans have taken to social media like Reddit and Twitter to celebrate, but perhaps none more prevalent than the creative director of the God of War series; Cory Barlog.
Although the recent God of War game is a reboot of the series, the 2005 title is still a classic in the eyes of many. Perhaps the mechanics are from a bygone era and do not hold up as well today, but they set the table for a character and a series that is still very much one of PlayStation’s strongest franchises. For many, it is hard to believe that the original game is already this old.
Cory Barlog recently tweeted out his excitement about the game. In fact, he pointed out the God of War is now old enough to drive at 16 years old, which he said is terrifying. Of course, God of War is also a very hard M-rated game, which means it is recommended for those who are 17 years of age or older, so technically God of War is not yet old enough to purchase and play itself without permission from an adult.
Barlog also made sure to specifically thank David Jaffe and the whole team at Sony Santa Monica for the efforts they put into making God of War. Most estimates but the series as a whole at over 50 million units sold, which is very impressive. That success started with the original God of War. Many argue as to which God of War game is the best, but it is exciting to celebrate the birthday/anniversary regardless of which is the favorite.
As fans celebrate the game that started it all, the follow-up to the PS4 2018 God of War reboot God of War Ragnarok is hopefully still releasing in 2021. Some rumors are pointing to the idea that the game may get pushed to 2022 instead, which would certainly be a bit disappointing. God of War Ragnarok will likely take full advantage of the PlayStation 5 technology, and the developers will want to take all the time in the world to make sure the game is right. It is not easy making a game so memorable that in sixteen years fans are celebrating it together online as a community.
