Capcom’s Monster Hunter series is arguably one of the company’s most successful franchises, especially within the handheld market. With the impending release of Monster Hunter Rise later this week and another Monster Hunter title on the way, fans will have many dragons to look forward to for months and years to come.
The second Monster Hunter title releasing this year on the Switch, Monster Hunter Stories 2, is, as the name suggests, more story-driven than the traditional gameplay featured in Rise. The sequel to the original released on the 3DS, Stories 2 will feature the same turn-based gameplay as the original, with co-op multiplayer included and cross-compatibility with Rise. While the game isn’t open-world like Rise, the storage size of Stories 2 is surprisingly hefty for a Switch title.
Officially revealed on Nintendo Australia’s game page, the file size for Monster Hunter Stories 2 is expected to be 14.6 GB. Compared to Monster Hunter Rise’s 6.6 GB, the spinoff Monster Hunter title is over two times the size of its main counterpart. A better comparison is the file size for Shin Megami Tensei Nocturne HD, another RPG set to release soon on the Switch, rounding at around 6 GB. Amusingly, the original file size of Monster Hunter Stories on the 3DS was only 1.8 GB in size.
Amiibo support was recently announced for Monster Hunter Stories 2, with the title confirmed to have at least three different amiibos on launch. The game will also have a deluxe edition and pre-order bonuses for players, including several exclusive armor sets and sticker sets to use in-game.
Following the discovery of Stories 2‘s file size, fans are concerned about the amount of content Rise will have compared to Stories 2 based on the file sizes between the two games. In the past, however, Monster Hunter games have been notoriously small in size compared to the amount of content the games have to offer. On launch, Monster Hunter World estimated around 16 GB and it became one of Capcom’s most successful titles in the past decade despite its small size compared to other PS4 titles at the time.
Fans expecting the original Monster Hunter Stories to return in some capacity on the Switch would be advised not to hold their breath. During an interview in November, Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto shut down rumors of Monster Hunter Stories being ported on the Switch. However, depending on the success of Monster Hunter Stories 2, the chance of the original on the Switch may be a consideration from the developers.
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin releases on July 9th, 2021 on PC and the Switch.
