Mortal Kombat isn’t exactly pretty or funny for most people, at least not in a traditional way. For most of its history, the only adorable thing to come out of Mortal Kombat are its signature babalities and friendships fatalities, but just like any other franchise, it’s not safe from the Funko Pop charm.
Recently Funko Pops have made the news due to some WandaVision spoilers revealing some key plot points for the Marvel series and in light of the Mortal Kombat reboot choosing to omit important characters like Johnny Cage and adding a mysterious newcomer challenger, perhaps some might hope for similar leaks.
To many people’s disappointment, Funko Pop isn’t bringing any major spoilers to Mortal Kombat as it launches its official Mortal Kombat movie lineup. At the top of the catalog are of course Mortal Kombat icons Scorpion and Sub-Zero, but joining them are Sonya Blade and most noticeably a fully armored weapon-wielding Cole Young, in a move that could signal which four characters might be poised for a more crucial role in the film.
The standout detail among all of these is the inclusion of new weaponry on Cole Young, who gets his hands on what could be some sort of legendary artifacts which are nowhere to be seen in the Mortal Kombat trailer, aside from the scaly rocky armor that was spotted by many. How powerful these items will turn out to be might depend on the newcomer’s true powers within the Mortal Kombat universe.
The rest of the Mortal Kombat Funko Pops include both a masked Scorpion and his unmasked Hanzo Hasashi version, also adding a glow-in-the-dark Sub-Zero and special crouching Scorpion which will come out as Walmart exclusives. Though still not available for sale, each Funko Pop will go for $11 each, a modest price when compared to the rarest most expensive Funko Pops out there.
While it’s no surprise Scorpion and Sub-Zero get the Funko Pop treatment since they also hoard the first few minutes of the movie, Sonya might be taking Johnny Cage and Liu Kang’s place as the more human leader. Cole Young’s role as a protagonist is seen by some as a way to take the load off the rest of the cast in order to not place too big of a burden on their in-game personalities without sacrificing authenticity, though there’s no telling how well that move could play out.
Mortal Kombat is planned for release in theaters and on HBO Max starting April 16, 2021.
