New Mortal Kombat Promo Teases Next Big Tournament After March Madness

In Mortal Kombat lore, the fight to the death tournament has been taking place for hundreds of years, so definitely quite a bit more than NCAA basketball. Despite that, with Zack Snyder’s Justice League, March Madness brackets, and PlayStation sales still going on, Mortal Kombat is well aware of its headliner event status come April.

With the Mortal Kombat trailer being quite the R-rated internet sensation, fans have been anxiously waiting for more footage to be released before the movie’s premiere. Perhaps fans even hoped that a new preview might show a couple more characters that made the transition from video game to the cinema, unlike Mortal Kombat game character Johnny Cage, who didn’t make it past the cutting board.

The most recent snippet from the Mortal Kombat reboot film was posted by the movie’s official Twitter account and though it recycles much of the same footage seen in the trailer, it does add a few newer shots of Mileena, Cole Young, Sonya Blade, and company. Stylized with plenty of k’s, the mini trailer reminds fans that there’s plenty to look forward to in April, even if that botched March Madness bracket isn’t playing out as expected.

Perhaps the most notable new element here is a wider shot of Cole Young’s encounter with Goro in which his armor can be more clearly seen, as well as a couple of club weapons, which could be some sort of millenary relic inherited from previous Mortal Kombat champions. Meanwhile, Sonya can be seen beating up Kano in the desert, though it’s unclear if this is just her roughing him up a little so he’ll cooperate or if the Black Dragon leader has already flipped on Earthrealm by then.

Mortal Kombat‘s Mileena is looking as nasty as ever, showing even more of her costume armor sans facemask, which might completely do away with her signature pink considering it won’t be necessary to tell her apart from Kitana since the Edenian princess is seemingly absent from this Mortal Kombat tourney. At this point, though, there might still be a chance for a second trailer to come out before the movie’s release, in case the producers have another ace up their sleeves like with Kabal’s official poster appearance.

With less than a month to go until the film’s premiere, Mortal Kombat is looking quite promising as a follow-up to Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Godzilla vs. Kong later this month. Which makes an even more compelling case for that $14.99 HBO Max subscription.

Mortal Kombat will be released on HBO Max on April 16, 2021.
