PUBG Mobile has entered into a very exclusive club recently as it passed the billion download mark. It now stands in the company of only two other games to have ever achieved such massive numbers: Subway Surfers and Pokemon GO. While it’s extremely unlikely that these are unique downloads, the figure is still awe-inspiring and is equivalent to about 13% of the planet’s entire population. Suffice to say, PUBG Mobile is ridiculously popular.
The game celebrated its three-year anniversary only a few days ago, releasing an electronic music square into PUBG Mobile. Now, however, Tencent has an even bigger reason to celebrate with its most recent milestone. To put the achievement into perspective, during 2020, PUBG Mobile generated over $2.6 billion dollars in revenue—more than doubling Pokemon GO.
To make matters even more impressive, PUBG Mobile lost its largest source of downloads last year when India banned the app over fears of cybersecurity following disagreements with China. At the time, India accounted for nearly 25% of all downloads. But even losing its most loyal fanbase could not stop the game’s meteoric rise to the top, and in the wake of events, PUBG Mobile is set to return to India.
If that weren’t enough, Tencent has moved to capitalize on PUBG Mobile’s unprecedented success with the release of a new mobile game. PUBG: New State brings a futuristic bent to the beloved battle royale. Set in 2051, PUBG: New State promises to bring a myriad of new vehicles, guns, and customization to the game, and aims to capture an even larger share of the mobile market.
PUBG Mobile is available for Android and iOS devices.
