Diablo 2: All Bosses Ranked According To Difficulty | Game Rant

Every good aRPG needs a satisfying climax, specifically in the form of bosses. They’re the ones waiting for the players after all the loot piñata they went through. They’re a test of the players’ mettle, and they’re even more intimidating when they’re actual demons.

Such is the case with Diablo 2, one of Blizzard Entertainment’s finest contributions to the gaming industry. After players finish the main storyline, the game mostly revolves around killing bosses over and over again for some “phat lewt.” That’s why it pays to know which of them are the toughest so players can prepare better.

10 Blood Raven

The first boss that players get to kill, Blood Raven, is of course the easiest. Many believe the Blood Raven is the fallen counterpart of the Rogue class in the first Diablo game, though this wasn’t confirmed in Diablo 2‘s lore.

With that said, she’s not really much of a challenge. In fact, some players even just zoom past her, hacking and slashing their way until a quest completion marker pops up without them realizing they’ve trampled over the Blood Raven.

9 The Summoner

Much like the Blood Raven, the Summoner was a key figure in the first game and thus deserves a right to be included. He’s supposedly one of the three original classes in Diablo, namely the Sorcerer. In the second game, he has a rather important role since he resides in the Arcane Sanctuary, practically acting as its gatekeeper.

Upon the players’ first encounter with him, the fight can get rather frantic as the Summoner knows no chill and will cast all spells he knows at the players. However, the fight is pretty if players can quickly close the gap and pummel the Summoner to death as his health and physical defense is low.

8 Guardians Of Mount Arreat

By far one of the most epic boss fights in Diablo 2 that doesn’t involve demons, the Guardians of Mount Arreat are actually three enemies. Korlic, Talic, and Madawc are three legendary ancient spirits who guard the summit of Mount Arreat.

Players will have to best them all at once and the fight can get rather hectic; each of them has their own resistances and specialties. Knowing which one to prioritize based on the player’s class and build is a good start if they want to defeat these bosses.

7 The Cow King

The Cow King is a special kind of boss that only appears if players are curious and adventurous enough. He’s located in The Secret Cow Level accessible only by combining Wirt’s Leg and a Scroll of Town Portal in the Horadric Cube.

After that, the players will be transported into an area filled with Hell Bovines — upright cows with halberds and one of them is the Cow King. The fight might look like a joke but it’s hazardous when underestimated since The Cow King has tons of immunities and has an Aura Enchanted.

6 Baal

Diablo’s siblings have somehow proven to be more effective or dangerous than him. Baal is one of them and he presented a rather serious threat to the Barbarian lands of Harrogath. He waged war against the land and even came close to taking Mount Arreat and the World Stone within.

Baal can prove to be a tough battle especially if players rely on melee combat. Still, many builds and classes can practically kill Baal off-screen with a competent setup. Moreover, he’s not really as big or imposing as his brothers.

5 Diablo

There he is, the titular boss himself, and the main troublemaker of the series. The Diablo in Diablo 2 is a little different from the first game as he was a revived version of himself via vessel. The vessel is none other than the Warrior from the first Diablo game. Hence, all three of the original classes are somewhat present in the second game, lovely reunion.

During the first encounter, Diablo is an insane boss to deal with as he can and has probably one-shot unprepared players, especially with the notorious lightning attack of his. However, subsequent runs in higher difficulties and better gear make him a breeze. Nevertheless, that first impression fight makes him menacing.

4 Mephisto

Mephisto isn’t much in the lower difficulties or initial run of the campaign but later on, he becomes a pain to deal with. He’s located in Act 3 and is one of the most frightening bosses in the game due to his appearance and tactics.

Mephisto can make quick work of hapless players with lightning, cold, and poison attacks. Ranged players often have difficulties facing Mephisto or his uber version because of his notorious skull missiles that can spell a quick death. Some players even opt to swap gear when facing his uber version.

3 Duriel

Duriel from Act 2 is just a lesser evil in Diablo 2 but that doesn’t mean he’s a pushover. In fact, this Maggot King is considered by many players as the toughest boss in the game.

Duriel’s arena is small and he occupies a large space, making evasion pretty difficult. Apparently, that’s not enough, as Duriel can also freeze the players in place with an innate aura, just in case they decide to move in the hysterically cramped room.

2 Andariel/Lilith

Andariel, or Lilith as named in higher difficulty levels, is also one of the lesser evils and the twin sister of Duriel. She’s located in Act 1 and serves as the end boss for that campaign phase. In terms of difficulty, she probably gives Duriel a run for his money.

Andariel is a terrifying sight and can quickly drain the players’ rejuvenation potions even if they’re used to fighting uber bosses over and over again. That’s because Andariel specializes in poison damage; in fact, the best tactic to counter her poison damage is to chug tons of healing potions instead of antidotes.

1 Nihlathak

Alas, the most dangerous boss in Diablo 2 (as subjectively discussed by players) is neither a demon nor monster; it’s a human necromancer named Nihlathak. He struck a deal with Baal in the expansion pack in order to spare Harrogath from the Lord of Destruction’s wrath.

This makes Nihlathak an accomplice so a fight with the players was inevitable. His corpse explosion will be forever known among many players as the most dangerous one-hit-kill attack in Diablo 2, especially on Hell difficulty. It even had to be nerfed.
