Monster Hunter Rise: A Complete Guide To Wyvern Riding

Monster Hunter Rise is the latest installment in the acclaimed Monster Hunter series. This time around, Capcom has created a title optimized for the Nintendo Switch. While the game does not impress graphically, it is a stunning addition to the series.

Like many Switch games, gameplay and storytelling have always been more of a focus than graphical fidelity. Because the game has just released, many players will need help with new quests, as well as some of the game’s basic mechanics. This guide will help players understand everything they need to know about Wyvern riding.

Unlike in Monster Hunter: WorldMonster Hunter Rise does not have a traditional mount system. Hunting monsters will be different too. Wyvern riding is the replacement for the mounting system, allowing players to control monsters throughout the world. Players will still need to inflict mounting damage to achieve a successful mount and gamers do not need to attack while physically on top of the monster. Rather, blue damage indicators will signify that gamers are wearing the monster down.

It is common for players to be pulled on top of the monster while attacking near it. After injuring a monster, it will eventually enter into a dazed state. This is apparent when the monster does not attack and crawls slowly on the ground.  The monster will be standing or lying idle when it is damaged enough to be mounted. Players should then approach the monster and an “attack and ride Wyvern” indicator will appear. If players choose to mount the monster, the character will use silk to mount and control it by pressing A. The entire process resembles a puppet and a puppeteer.

After players have properly mounted the monster, they will be able to control its movements and attacks. Gamers will need to hold the R button to begin running with the monster. Every monster will be different, but each will have four primary moves. The first is a light attack. This attack will be the most efficient way to get rid of small creatures that are in the way.

Every monster will have a timer that limits the amount of time players can ride it and each attack has a cooldown, so players will want to use the attacks as sparingly as possible. The second attack is a strong attack. This will inflict a significant amount of damage and should be used when battling larger and more powerful creatures. The heavy attack will have a longer cooldown as well.

As players attack other monsters, there will be a meter that builds up with each successful hit. Once the meter maxes out, players can use the special finishing move. While riding, it is important to use the light and heavy attacks at the right time and land the powerful finishing move. Gamers have a few other maneuvers at their disposal while Wyvern riding. Players can press Y to launch the monster into the air.

Additionally, gamers can perform an evade and emergency evade. Evading will essentially perform a dodge mechanic to avoid other monster attacks. Emergency evade will send players into the air and dismount them from the wyvern. After performing an emergency evade, players will still have a short time period where they can re-mount the monster. This move is effective when players think the monster will be knocked down or when fighting a losing battle. Players do need to keep in mind that the emergency evade will speed up the timer.

There are dozens of monsters players can ride, and each will present unique strengths and weaknesses. Listed below are a few examples of monsters from the demo. Gamers should be excited to get out there and try out all of the new monsters after the official launch.

Great Izuchi

The Great Izuchi will use its claws when the light attack is initiated. As a strong attack, the monster will tailspin or tail slam. Izuchi’s finishing move is a devastating combination of the two.

The monster’s light attack is a forward lunge and its heavy attack is a slashing combo. Azeroth’s finishing move is a dash followed by two powerful slashes.

Mizutsune’s light attack is a claw swipe similar to the other monsters. As a strong attack, Mizutsune will move forward and release a damaging bubble. The monster’s punishing move will release multiple bubbles while inflicting damage by diving and spinning.

Rathian will perform a dash forward as a light attack. The monster’s strong attack involves either a tail flip attack and dive, or a fireball barrage. As a finishing move, Rathian will bite, tail flip, dive, and tail spin again.

Monster Hunter Rise is now available for the Nintendo Switch and a PC port is expected in early 2022.
