‘National Treasure’ Series Coming To Disney Plus | Game Rant

The last National Treasure film came out in 2007, and ever since then rumors of a third film in the adventure saga continue to fly around, but no announcement has been made official. Fans of the Nicolas Cage starring, Declaration of Independence stealing franchise have been left without much hope for the future of the series, given how almost nothing has been heard about the fabled third installment. In a surprise twist of fate, however, there has been some interesting news about the franchise.

In accordance with the Disney Plus strategy of spinning up as many different original series as possible, a recent report from The Hollywood Reporter indicates that a National Treasure series has been greenlit with the original writers and producer Jerry Bruckheimer on board. The project has apparently been in progress for nearly a year, which seems to line up with Bruckheimer’s recent comments hoping to produce National Treasure series and get to work on a third film.

That said, this new series doesn’t seem to be picking up where National Treasure: Book of Secrets left off, with the news indicating that this 10-episode show will be a reimagining of sorts with a new main character. The series will follow Jess Morales, a DREAMer attempting to recover the lost treasure and uncover secrets about her family’s history. It has been reported that the show will explore themes of identity, community, patriotism, and more when it makes its way to the streaming platform.

Strict National Treasure originalists don’t need to fret too much, however, as Bruckheimer has previously mentioned that he wants the potential National Treasure 3 to star the original cast: “The one for Disney+ is a much younger cast. It’s the same concept but a young cast. The one for theatrical would be the same cast.” Of course, there doesn’t seem to be an official production ongoing for that hypothetical film, but no doubt Disney will be keeping a close eye on the reception for the series.

Perhaps if the show does well, that may put long-term fans one step closer to their dream of a third National Treasure with Cage reprising the starring role. Still, in the meantime, a spiritual reboot isn’t a bad idea at all and could be just the thing to revive the franchise. While there still isn’t much news or information about the upcoming show, hopefully, teases, previews and hints will start coming out soon.

Cage, on the other hand, hasn’t been left out of the streaming game. The often eccentric actor recently served as the host of a Netflix series exploring the history of swear words.

National Treasure (2004) is now available on Disney Plus.
