PS5 Exclusive Returnal Has Gone Gold | Game Rant

Housemarque’s Returnal has been one of the bigger names coming to Sony’s flagship console during 2021, hoping to rouse audiences with its creepy sci-fi aesthetic, roguelike format, and surreal story. Today, it was confirmed that the game is one step closer to its anticipated release at the end of next month, with Housemarque revealing that the title has officially gone gold and is now ready to hit shelves.

The announcement was made via the studio’s Twitter account, which gave thanks to the hardworking developers involved in bringing Returnal to life while also praising PlayStation Studios for its continued support. The title will officially launch on April 30, exclusively for the PlayStation 5.

For those who haven’t kept up with the release of Returnalthe game follows a character known as Selene who finds herself stranded on an alien planet after following a mysterious broadcast signal. She soon learns that she’s not alone on this extraterrestrial world, as she’s stalked by an array of monstrous creatures and other enemies she has to vanquish. The game will feature a myriad of interesting mechanics and gameplay features, including the presence of a time loop that sees Selene awaken at the beginning of her adventure each time she falls in battle.

Recently, Sony and Housemarque have been teasing an in-depth story for the game, including surreal sections tying into Selene’s past. It appears the title will attempt to craft a much heavier narrative than other examples of the genre, using its time-altering premise to investigate the psychology of its lead protagonist. It already looks to be a mind-bending sci-fi adventure that’s sure to scratch that roguelike itch, providing plenty of intense shootouts and unsettling scares. Returnal will join Sony’s stacked lineup of exclusives for 2021, including the likes of Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Horizon: Forbidden West, Deathloop, Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, and the newest God of War.

With the game hitting next month, April’s looking like a tantalizing four-week period for major video game releases, beginning with People Can Fly’s cooperative shooter Outriders, which launches on April 1. Other releases slated to debut during the month are Star Wars Republic Commando’s PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch port, Nier Replicant’s long-awaited remaster, and New Pokemon Snapwhich brings the iconic spin-off series back for the first time since 1999. The latter will launch on the same day as Returnal, making April 30 a big day for players who frequent both the PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch.

Returnal will release on April 30 for PlayStation 5.
