‘Shang-Chi’ Release Date Pushed Back Again By Two Months

Walt Disney Studios has announced changes to its summer plans, which include delaying some of its highly-anticipated films. Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is among them and its release has been pushed back from July to September.

With many cinemas around North America still closed and keeping in mind the safety of film-goers, Disney and Marvel Studios took the decision to move many of their films. The Shang-Chi delay was mainly caused when the release for Black Widow, another one of the most anticipated films of the year, was pushed back from a May to July 9 release, the date Shang-Chi was originally meant to hit theaters.

This is not the first time Shang Chi has had to face a delay though. It was previously scheduled for a May release, only to be pushed to July 9, 2021.  Additionally, the film’s shooting had to be put on hold due to the pandemic. While filming first began in February 2020, Marvel had to pause Shang-Chi‘s production due to the lockdown being put in place. However, the cast and crew were able to return to set in July and the film wrapped shooting in October, giving it enough time before its summer 2021 release.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is an integral part of Marvel’s Phase Four, introducing the first Asian superhero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film stars Simu Liu, best known for his portrayal of Jung Kim in the CBC Television sitcom Kim’s Convenience, as the main character. Awkwafina will be playing the role of his best friend and partner-in-crime, Katy.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will narrate the story of Shang-Chi confronting the infamous Ten Rings terrorist group, which fans of the MCU will remember from the Iron Man trilogy. Along with Marvel’s Black Widow, it is one of the biggest MCU films scheduled for the 2021 roster. However, with Disney set on a theatrical release for both films and not opting for the digital release route, the premiere for both has been moved several times. Black Widow will be debuting on Disney Plus as part of the Disney Premier Access on the same day as its theatrical release. There is no news on whether Shang-Chi will also follow the same route.

Apart from Shang-Chi and Black Widow, some other Disney projects to have been moved include Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy, which will now premiere on August 13. Emma Stone’s Cruella will release in theaters and on Disney Plus on May 28 while The King’s Man will release on December 22, 2021.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings will release in theaters on September 3, 2021.
