Disney+’s newest series, Falcon and the Winter Soldier reintroduces Sam Wilson and James ‘Bucky’ Barnes several months after Avengers: Endgame. After five years away, they’ve returned to a hectic world filled with new threats, one in need of new heroes. Sam and Bucky have to acclimate to a tense world rife with enemies and live up to Steve Roger’s legacy.

This series has plenty of depth for MCU fans to enjoy. Those who have followed the Avengers can rest assured that this is a worthy inclusion in Marvel’s catalog. Those well-versed in Marvel’s comics may spot nods to the source material hidden in the show’s freshman outing.

7 Sam’s Reluctance To Take The Shield

The last time viewers saw Sam Wilson, an elderly Steve Rogers gave him his own shield. With Steve retiring as Captain America, he asks Sam to take his place. Fans of the comics know that Sam does become Captain America eventually, but at the moment, Sam isn’t sure of himself as a hero.

Sam passes the shield on and has it put on display as a memorial to the previous Captain America’s service. Viewers can assume that Sam will eventually accept his role as the new Cap, but he’ll need to find his confidence before that happens.

6 Rhodes Hints At His Solo Series

After Sam turns down Captain America’s mantle, Rhodes pulls him aside and asks him why he won’t take Steve’s place. Sam doesn’t feel like it’s his place to forge forward as Captain America or shouldering his predecessor’s expectations. As one who knows how that feels, Rhodes tells him that it’s his responsibility to fill in and make things right, as he plans to do for his fallen friend, Tony Stark. With War Machine set to return in his own Disney+ show, Armor Wars, comic fans were undoubtedly excited.

Following the comic line of the same name, Armor Wars will join Rhodey on his mission to stop Tony Stark tech from falling into unworthy hands.

5 Batroc is Back

At the beginning of the episode, Falcon gets into an aerial skirmish with a familiar face. The man shown above was first introduced in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. After Steve Rogers beat him, he was arrested and detained.

Fans of the comics recognize this character as Batroc the Leaper, a supervillain adept in the French kick-boxing form, savate. He’s been a reoccurring enemy in Marvel comics since the ’60s. He may not be exclusive to Captain America’s rogue gallery, but he’s sure to stir up trouble for Sam and Bucky.

4 Bucky’s Trauma

Sam isn’t the only one struggling to find his place in the world after The Blip. After spending decades as an instrument of war, Bucky is finally seeking mental treatment. His time as a human weapon may have ended, but the mental scars he’s survived have left him broken. It’s an overdue character arc for someone who’s experienced trauma unique to himself.

The movies may have glossed over Bucky’s atrocities, but the comics are far more detailed regarding the Winter Soldier’s dark past. Thankfully, the series explores these moments and shows how this hero deals with the pain he’s endured.

3 Bucky’s List

When Bucky visits his therapist, he tells her of an encounter with a woman who previously used his services as the Winter Soldier. After giving her a scare and turning her over to the authorities, he crosses her name off a list he has in his notebook. Each of these names relates to a person who solicited his skills when he was a brainwashed Hydra soldier. One name, in particular, stands out among the rest. Zemo’s name appears as one yet to be checked off.

This relates to Baron Helmut Zemo, the villain introduced in Captain America: Civil War. He has yet to appear in the series, but trailers indicate his design will be comic accurate with him donning his signature mask. As one of Captain America’s adversaries, it’s fitting that Sam and Bucky track him down and apprehend him.

2 Flag-Smasher

At one point in the episode, a group of masked criminals robs a bank. These “Flag Smashers” follow a super-human with the same name. Comic fans will recognize the name Flag-Smasher, as he is another member of Captain America’s rogue gallery. Interestingly enough, the MCU seems to have turned this singular enemy into an organized threat in this rendition.

This group attacks in an organized way and functions effectively under pressure. These anarchists aim to destroy all borders and create a world without nations. Even comic fans aren’t sure what to expect from this interpretation of Flag-Smasher. Only time will tell how Sam and Bucky combat this global threat.

1 John Walker – The New Captain America

The first episode of Falcon and the Winter Soldier ends when the Department of Defense chooses a new Captain America to fill in for Steve Rogers. This goes against both Steve and Sam’s wishes. Because Sam was unwilling to fulfill Steve’s wishes, the American government stepped in and chose the next Captain America for him. The person that the United States chose to replace Steve Rogers is John Walker.

Walker’s comic book moniker is US Agent. Walker is an army veteran who underwent human experimentation. These experiments resulted in him gaining super-human strength. While he was chosen to take Captain America’s place, he’s got a few controversial beliefs that contradict the type of hero Steve Rogers framed for Captain America. Walker in the comics is a right-wing conservative with xenophobic tendencies. He prioritizes his own American values and Christian principles. He’s a stark contradiction to the Captain America before him; it’s clear Walker was chosen as a statement. What message the government is trying to send hasn’t been established yet, but more information should be revealed as the episodes continue.
