The Walking Dead: 10 Characters With The Most Character Development

The apocalypse changed many of the folks in The Walking Dead, some more than others.

There have been many characters on the show and some have shown more personal growth than others. Living in an apocalyptic reality isn’t easy and it changes people in different ways. Surviving a walker-filled world requires not only strength and bravery but also the ability to work with others and live in a society.

Looking at all of the characters now it’s hard to handpick just a few of them since there have been so many character-building moments during The Walking Dead‘s 10 seasons. However, there are still some that stand out the most.

10 Eugene Porter

Eugene has made it this far into the apocalyptic world, but he didn’t do it in the best of ways. He used his intelligence to fool others into helping and protecting him, knowing he couldn’t possibly make it out alone. At some point, Eugene even betrays his original group to join forces with Negan, even though he later on changes his mind.

After the time jump in the show, Eugene grows as a person and is now brave and capable of fending for himself. He isn’t as selfish and will protect those he cares for without hesitating.

9 Carl

As the seasons went on, Carl grew up. Fans of the show watched him as he went from a shy boy to a mature young man. Although he had a more rebellious phase when he would disobey others and even becomes somewhat cold towards others, this was undoubtedly a result of the horrible things he had to experience.

Carl eventually begins to heal and starts becoming wiser. His last episodes on the show are proof of his sense of responsibility and how even at, still, such a young age he wasn’t afraid of sacrificing himself for the good of the community.

8 Father Gabriel Stokes

Previously a priest that would hide in his church and ignore the people outside asking for help, Father Gabriel has since then become much tougher. Much like Eugene, Gabriel showed a lack of bravery and selflessness, he would not help others if it meant putting himself in danger.

Now Gabriel is one of the community’s most important leaders and does what he most to protect his group. A great example of this is in season 10’s “One More,” as Gabriel ruthlessly kills a dangerous man after fooling him into believing that they will take him back to their community.

7 Aaron

The apocalypse has changed many people’s mindsets in the world of The Walking Dead. Thankfully, some adapt and grow without losing the goodness in their heart.

Aaron, a recruiter for Alexandria, has always been a helpful member of the group. He managed to become even more of a valuable asset. He really stepped up to the point that he is one of the most important people in the community. Although Aaron is still a charitable person, he is also much stronger, cautious, and more ruthless now.

6 Rick Grimes

Rick Grimes was the main character of the show for most of its seasons. He had to deal with a lot of hardships throughout the years. He had to learn while leading the group and made major decisions, always trying to protect his family and the ones closest to him.

Negan was Rick’s biggest obstacle and after the war with the Saviors and the death of his son, the protagonist really changed his way of thinking. Rick had to take a much more peaceful approach to his way of leading.

5 Daryl Dixon

Daryl has always been valuable to the group due to his knowledge when it comes to hunting and tracking. Daryl’s character really began to shine as his friendship with Carol began to blossom and grow stronger.

Daryl quickly became a fan favorite as he began to show more of himself. Beth was one of the first people on the show that he became attached to and tried his best to always protect. Lydia and Judith are also very good examples of Daryl’s soft side. He proved that he is very different from his brother. Daryl is a gentle soul and always ensures the safety and protection of the group.

4 Maggie Rhee

Initially kept away on her father’s farm, Maggie was completely sheltered from the reality of the apocalypse. She had to learn how to fight and how to adapt to an entirely new world.

Maggie lost everyone she ever had before the apocalypse as well as her husband, Glenn. She maintains her caring personality even if she can be harsh sometimes, especially since she has to deal with Negan’s presence so often now. But Maggie has definitely grown into a stronger woman, she is tough as nails.

3 Morgan Jones

Losing his wife was one of the hardest things Morgan had to endure, but he still helped Rick then. However, losing his son, Duane, completely broke Morgan. He became a hostile man, mercilessly killing anyone that would cross paths with him.

Thankfully, he met Eastman, a doctor who made Morgan see the world through different eyes and really changed his mindset. He found some peace and saw that all life was precious, it was then that Morgan stopped killing unless he absolutely had to.

2 Michonne Hawthorne

The first time Michonne appeared on the show, she looked like a mysterious figure as she walked around the woods, leading two armless walkers with chains around their necks. When she first joined the group she was very quiet but clearly very skillful with her sword.

Haunted by her demons, Michonne had to allow herself to let her wounds heal, which she did as she gradually felt more comfortable with the group. She eventually became not only a warrior but also a friend and a leader.

1 Carol Peletier

From a housewife married to an abusive husband back in season 1 to one of the strongest characters in season 10, Carol is definitely the person that’s had the most character development on The Walking Dead.

Carol has grown quite a lot as a person. She figured out her self-worth after the death of her husband. After the death of her daughter, Sophia, Carol had to learn how to fight so she could better protect those she cares for. Although she has suffered, it has always turned her into a tougher person.
