There are plenty of reasons a Twitch streamer might ban a viewer. But one might not expect to get banned for giving too much money. However, one Twitch streamer has resorted to banning viewers for precisely that.
Ludwig became the most subscribed to streamer on Twitch thanks to his impressive nine-day subathon. Concerned that viewers were spending too much money on subscriptions, Ludwig attempted to limit large donations. He has since resorted to banning viewers that ignore the rules.
The idea of a subathon is that the stream continues as long as it keeps getting new subscribers. Some estimate that Ludwig had pulled in upwards of 109,000 subs by Wednesday afternoon, more than doubling his previous number. Each sub adds 15 seconds to the timer, which as of this writing, sits at over 31 hours and counting. Subscribers can also keep it going by donating bits, which are small donations worth about 1.4 cents each. However, Ludwig became increasingly uncomfortable at the amount of money his subscribers were spending. Some viewers were gifting hundreds of subs at the cost of several thousand dollars. One viewer gave away nearly $7,000 worth of subscriptions.
That is a lot of money, and Ludwig was uncomfortable with such large donations. Twitch streamers have no way of knowing where the money comes from, and that made Ludwig nervous. His biggest concern was kids and teenagers spending their parents’ money without permission. Even if that is not happening, the prospect of people spending thousands of dollars on him made Ludwig uneasy.
These concerns prompted Ludwig to set a limit of one hundred subs, about $500, per person. And as Ludwig pointed out, that is still a lot of money. He noted that if only one percent of the viewers gifted 100 subs, it would be enough to keep the stream going another week. He also capped the number of bits a single viewer can donate.
However, it seems some fans were still eager to spend a lot of money on Ludwig’s stream. It did not take long for some of them to find a way around the restrictions. These workarounds include using multiple accounts or simply splitting the donations into separate transactions. Ludwig’s moderators then began banning viewers that circumvented the rules.
While the bans are not permanent, banned viewers will not be able to watch the rest of the subathon. The decision appears to be controversial, with some viewers in the chat asking for the cap’s removal. However, that seems unlikely given Ludwig’s concerns about large donations.
