There are a lot of great antagonists in Kingdom Hearts, and Xemnas is one of the best. He was introduced in Kingdom Hearts II as the leader of Organization XIII, which a lot of the series’ original characters were in at one point or another.
Xemnas is very smart and manipulative. While he gave the other nobodies in the organization a home, he also had them go on missions for him everyday and didn’t cared about what they wanted. He also constantly lied to them and felt no emotion. Xemnas speaks with a very slow and deep voice, making anything that he has to say sound incredibly important. Here are ten of his most impactful lines.
10 “There Was A Time When I Trusted You To Deal With Traitors. And Now, Your Betrayal Outstrips Them All. What Final Words Do You Have For Your Superior?”
Back when he was in Organization XIII, Axel fought any of the traitors that the group had. He went to Castle Oblivion, where he found out that Marluxia and Larxene were planning on being the leaders of the organization and made sure that they were defeated, along with Vexen, Lexaeus, and Zexion, who had also gone to the castle, leaving Axel as the only survivor. He even fought Xion and Roxas, his two closest friends, before he betrayed the organization himself. When Xemnas finally confronted him at the Keyblade Graveyard, he said this to him.
9 “You Seek Answers. You Feel Nothing. Nothing Is Real. I Can Give You Purpose.”
When Sora turned into a heartless and a nobody, Kairi quickly brought him back to his original self, causing Roxas to not have Sora’s body, memories, or personality. He awakened outside of the mansion at Twilight Town. Xemnas found him and gave him his name, by rearranging the letters of Sora’s name and adding an X in it. Roxas became Organization XIII’s keyblade wielder, and even though he didn’t know what he was fighting for, he knew that Xemnas gave him everything that he had, thinking that the organization was where he belonged for nearly a year.
8 “You Accept Darkness, Yet Choose To Live In The Light. So Why Is It That You Loathe Us Who Teeter On The Edge Of Nothing? We Who Were Turned Away By Both Light And Dark- Never Given A Choice?”
When Sora, Riku, Kairi, King Mickey, Donald, and Goofy confronted Xemnas at the end of Kingdom Hearts II, he asked them why they were against him so much. Riku told him that it’s because Organization XIII was messing up the worlds, as they kept on meddling with the people within them.
Upon hearing this, Xemnas pretended to be sad, but Sora caught on to the act, not knowing that Xemnas not having a heart was the true deception.
7 “The Time Has Arrived. And At Long Last, We See Before Us The Great Collection Of Hearts. Hearts Full Of Rage… Hate… Sadness… And Bliss. Shining Down Upon Us Is The Crystallization Of All Hearts- Kingdom Hearts. There, In The Sky, Hangs The Promise Of A New World. My Friends! Let Us Gain Further Power, To Conquer The Human Heart, And Claim It As Our Own.”
Xemnas deceived the majority of Organization XIII, making them think that everything they were doing was so they could obtain their own hearts. He gave them a lot of inspiring speeches and this one from 358/2 Days was one of the best. He said these words to Xigbar, Xaldin, Saix, Axel, Demyx, Luxord, Roxas, and Xion as they looked up at their Kingdom Hearts. They believed that he had their interest in mind and had no idea what his true intentions were, proving how manipulative he was.
6 “Still So Blind. A Nobody Is What’s Left Behind When One Gives His Heart To Darkness. There Is Only One Way To Bring Roxas Back, Which Is For You To Give Your Heart Up As Well. Sora, Have You Finally Decided To Call Upon The Darkness?”
Throughout the series, Xemnas and the other incarnations of Xehanort wanted either Sora or Roxas to become a member of the organization. When Xemnas and Ansem the Seeker of Darkness found out that Sora had gone to Twilight Town in hopes of finding a way to bring Roxas back, they tried to convince him to give up his heart, but Sora refused to listen to them and found another way to save his nobody.
5 “I Don’t Need Hearts. I Will Scatter Them All To The Winds! What Difference Does One Little Light Make? You Have Others. Just As We Have More Darknesses To Replenish Our Ranks.”
When Roxas finally returned at the end of Kingdom Hearts III, he told Xemnas that he wasn’t good at winning over hearts. Xemnas responded to him by saying this as he captured Kairi and brought her to Master Xehanort.
When Sora caught up, he refused to fight the master so he wouldn’t get the X-Blade. However, this caused Xehanort to strike Kairi down in order to achieve his goal. Sora was devastated and did everything he could to save her, even risking his own existence.
4 “Heroes From The Realm Of Light… I Will Not Allow It To End This Way- Not Yet. If Light And Darkness Are Eternal, Then Surely We Nothings Must Be The Same… Eternal!”
At the end of Kingdom Hearts II, Xemnas had a long battle against Sora and Riku. Not wanting everything that he worked for in this game to have been for nothing and hoping to be the victor of their fight, Xemnas refused to give up. When he said these words, Sora and Riku both told and showed him that he was wrong. They would see him again many times after before their final departure.
3 “One Can Banish The Heart From The Body, But The Body Will Try To Replace It The First Chance It Gets, For As Many Times As It Takes. And So I Knew, Even After We Were Divided Into Heartless And Nobodies, It Was Just A Temporary Separation.”
For a long time, both the players and the characters in the series believed that the nobodies in the organization did not have hearts. However, in Dream Drop Distance, Xemnas revealed that this was a lie that he told his followers. His true goal was to turn them into Xehanort. Sora was shocked to hear this, especially since some of the members, such as Xigbar, knew about Xemnas’ true plan and supported it.
2 “Students Do Take After Their Teachers. Only A Fool Would Be Your Apprentice. After All, None Of This Would Have Happened Without You. You Are The Source Of All Heartless. It Was Your Research That Inspired Me To Go Further Than You Ever Dared.”
Before Xemnas became a nobody, he was an apprentice of Ansem’s. However, he betrayed his master and created Organization XIII with the other apprentices Ansem had. Years later, Ansem joined King Mickey, Riku, and Namine to do everything he could to defeat the nobodies. When Ansem and Xemnas met again, the former apprentice said these words to him. Ansem, though he didn’t actually die, was willing to sacrifice himself to ruin Xemnas’ Kingdom Hearts and ended up in the Realm of Darkness.
1 “I Feel… The Emptiness Where My Companions Once Stood. I Took Them For Granted. And Now, I Have… Nothing. My First Surge Of Emotion In Years… For As Long As I Can Remember… And It’s… Loneliness. Do You See? A Heart Is Just Pain.”
When Xemnas was defeated for the last time in Kingdom Hearts III, Sora asked him how he felt, knowing that he had a heart. This was Xemnas’ response, showing the regret that he felt for what he did. Sora told Xemnas that feeling pain is part of being a human. Hearing this, Xemnas understood that living with pain made people strong as he faded away.
