Bandai Namco Reveals Best-Selling ‘Tales of’ Series Games

Bandai Namco recently revealed the order of the best-selling Tales of series. The franchise began back in 1995 with Tales of Phantasia on the Super Famicom, and continues to produce new iterations to this day. Because of the overseas success of the Tales of series, and the inability to process that data quickly, Bandai Namco’s rankings reflect figures from last year, but current rankings would likely be about the same.

At the top of the leaderboard are titles that garnered massive popularity in North America. At the number two spot is Tales of Vesperia, which joined the Xbox Game Pass last year. Just ahead of it, by a margin of just 30,000 copies, is Tales of Symphonia. While Symphonia predates Vesperia by six years, Symphonia was the most successful of the entire series in North American markets. In the first three years after its release, Symphonia had already sold nearly a million copies.

With the newest entry Tales of Arise set to drop later this year, it may surprise fans to know that the first title in the series, Tales of Phantasia, still holds the sixth spot in series’ sales despite releasing over 25 years ago. This is a testament to the series’ solid start and enduring popularity.

With the exploration of the regional rankings, Bandai Namco revealed that older games in the series generally topped the charts in both North American and Asian markets. This leaves fans wondering if Tales of Arise will be able to buck the trend of relatively poor performances by newer titles, and whether it can claim a top spot in the rankings.

Tales of Arise is in development for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
