Battlefield 6 Seems Determined to Beat Call of Duty 2021 to the Punch

Without a doubt, many remember the days where there was constant debate between Battlefield and Call of Duty. Which shooter was better and would leave a bigger mark was constantly tossed back and forth until franchise fatigue began to hit both titles. While both have preserved, it seems that conversation has shifted more toward Call of Duty in recent years, as its recent string of games have been seemingly better received than Battlefield‘s.

This debate will be getting two new entries this year. Electronic Arts has already confirmed Battlefield 6 for this year, while Call of Duty 2021 is inevitable. Rumors abound about the latest title, with them running the gamut from future-set WW3 to an alternate WW2 timeline to accurate, typical WW2 timeline. In short, while there is a ton of speculation around the latter, the only one in confirmed circles seems to be Battlefield 6.

That’s not to say mum’s the word on Call of Duty 2021, however. The latest rumors and reports seem substantial enough, indicating the game is called Call of Duty: WW2 Vanguard. Now, that’s most likely a code name, but that like much else of the title remains to be seen. This presumably-developed-by-Sledgehammer-Games title is also said to take place during World War 2, and that begs a few questions. In terms of Call of Duty: Warzone, which it seems fated to merged with, that would involve going further back in time. Of course, all of this should be taken with a grain of salt.

Regardless of how reliable the rumors/reports seem to be, there’s no telling what the game will be until its developer (Sledgehammer?) and publisher Activision begin marketing for it. Traditionally, Call of Duty titles are revealed by the end of May, but that may not be the case. Revealing a new game so early in the year could undermine the traction of Modern Warfare, Black Ops Cold War, and even Warzone. As such, it seems an official reveal might just come later this year in terms of maintaining the variety of ongoing CoD titles. This might doubly be a problem, as it means EA can seize the moment.

As it stands, there’s only little more confirmed about Battlefield 6, but it’s the type of information that’s important. Much like Call of Duty, there are rumors about Battlefield‘s setting, but its actual existence is indeed known. Late last year, EA confirmed a new Battlefield game for holiday 2021, and the latest talk around it includes a reveal coming soon. Of course, soon is subjective and unverified, but if Battlefield 6 takes a stage in April or May, it could very well get ahead of the next CoD game, even by conservative measures.

Indeed, it would be wise for Battlefield 6 to get ahead of Call of Duty. The latter may have the sheer saturation of Call of Duty games to deal with, but it’s still a Call of Duty games. There’s no doubt it’ll sale well when it drops later this year, and Battlefield 6 is chasing redemption in the eyes of many. As such, for Battlefield 6 to come out first and say “this is the game, this is when you’ll get it, and here’s all the new things it does” means that its message can spread faster. Now, the quality of information matters as well, but first impressions are undeniable. Battlefield 6 dominating the conversation for even a month or two likely improves its standing later this year.

There’s no telling when either game is revealed, and certainly, it’s not like Activision has to say as much either regarding Call of Duty 2021. It could come in and be revealed in early May, completely stealing the thunder from Battlefield 6, but that seems unlikely. Black Ops: Cold War, for example, had a much more active rumor mill (which, in comparison to the current one, is just typical rumor mill action). There were also rumors about how it would integrate with Warzone for months, and none of that has begun yet.

As it stands, it’s almost a snail race. Next-to-nothing is officially known about Battlefield 6, and nothing is officially known about Call of Duty 2021. That’s not much, but it may be all that Battlefield 6 needs to stick the reveal.

At the end of the day, both games will hopefully be caliber shooters. Regardless of setting, reveal, or even release date, gamers win as long as both games deliver on a high quality. That said, there’s certainly some fun to the Battlefield vs. Call of Duty debate, and it would be interesting for it to return in good nature. No doubt, if both Battlefield 6 and Call of Duty release fall/holiday 2021, it means good competition. In turn, that means that each game will hopefully be pulling out all the stops. Battlefield 6 seems to be doing that, as it’s also reported that the next Need for Speed was delayed in order to get the game additional resources.

It’ll be interesting to see how it turns out, but Battlefield 6 may just drop the first official content. It would be wise to do so, as many fans may feel burned by the last few entries, but knowing that Battlefield 6 is coming in full force for the PS5 and Xbox Series X is enticing no matter what.

Battlefield 6 is confirmed to be in development.
