‘The continuing story of survival horror’ won’t be continuing for much longer, at least not on television, as AMC’s The Walking Dead gears up for its 11th and final season. Still, zombie fans aren’t going to be starved for content by any means, as the franchise already has multiple spinoff’s ongoing, and several more in production, some of which will tie directly into the AMC show.
While fans are likely familiar with Fear the Walking Dead and The Walking Dead: The World Beyond, there are also a few other series in production, such as an anthology series, as well as a show featuring fan favorite characters Carol and Daryl. It was during an interview about his upcoming show Invincible that Robert Kirkman, co-creator of the original comics, talked about the spin-offs and what the plans were for the zombie survival IP.
When it comes to the spin-off with Carol and Daryl, Kirkman couldn’t say much, though he did assure fans that the show was still on track and that it would hit the ground running once season 11 was winding down. As of right now, the 2 characters are an important part of the final season of The Walking Dead and therefore the team needs to focus on that story before moving on: “The Carol and Daryl spinoff is something that I think will ramp up in production closer to the end of the 11th season of the show, which we are very much knee-deep in right now.”
Kirkman also had a few thoughts about the anthology series that was recently announced, stating that the first season will not be as long as a season of The Walking Dead. He admitted that it would not be 16 episodes but that they hoped to get multiple seasons, and that the freedom of an anthology series would allow them to do a lot more than they could with the linear plot of something like The Walking Dead: “I think it’s a tremendous opportunity to explore many different aspects of the Walking Dead universe, to be able to jump forward and backward in time, and also do things that are much different than what we’ve done on The Walking Dead thus far.”
Particularly interesting, however, was one project that he couldn’t even confirm outright. During the interview, Kirkman was asked about the possibility of a Walking Dead project set within another country with a non-English language, to which his response was: “Yeah, I will answer that question by looking silently over my coffee cup. It’s entirely possible.” While it’s certainly not an announcement by any means, the interviewer then remarked that they thought such a project would be ‘cool,’ and Kirkman remarked: “I think it will be! Possibly! Maybe! We’ll see.” So hardcore Walking Dead fans may want to keep an eye out for more news on that front in the future.
