Though it initially ran alongside Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Warzone is still going strong. Rather than taking a yearly approach like other Call of Duty games, this one is simply continuing to update itself year after year to keep up with new releases. The most recent of these large updates saw the game integrate with 2020’s Call of Duty Black Ops: Cold War, and now there are rumors spreading about what next year might bring to the popular battle royale title. If these rumors are to be believed, fans may get an entirely new map based on World War 2.
For those that don’t know, Call of Duty games are on a yearly release schedule, and each year a different developer takes the lead. Typically speaking, the developer rotates between Infinity Ward (responsible for 2019’s Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone), Treyarch (creator of 2020’s Black Ops: Cold War), and Sledgehammer Games. 2021 should be Sledgehammer Games’ turn to make the next Call of Duty, so there are reports that it will be a sequel to 2017’s Call of Duty: WW2.
If this is in fact the case, then recent rumors that Call of Duty: Warzone will be adding a World War 2 themed map seem much more believable. Just like in previous years, it would take a few months after the game’s release, but fans can expect to see Warzone integrate with this new game in the same way that it did with Black Ops: Cold War. Although that integration was a bit messy, hopefully Infinity Ward learns from its mistakes and makes the process smoother this time around.
The rumors come from this tweet above by Tom Henderson. He claims that he is confident that there will be a new map in Warzone in 2022 based on Call of Duty 2021‘s World War 2, but that it may not be a full-fledged map. Instead, he compares it to the Rebirth Island map that released last year. In a follow-up tweet, he goes on to say that this should be in addition to the new map rumored to be arriving in April assuming that there are no more unforeseen delays.
Fans will quickly notice that almost all of this information is rumored or unconfirmed. Activision has yet to make an official statement about the nature of Call of Duty 2021, and it certainly hasn’t said anything about how that will affect Call of Duty: Warzone. Until that time comes, it would be best for fans to take this information with a grain of salt, as there’s no guarantee that any of it is true.
Call of Duty: Warzone is available now on PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
