Each year Metacritic issues a ranked list of its top publishers based on the games that were released across the entire year. It has taken some time, but Metacritic has now issued its ranking for 2020. Last year was, by all definitions, an abnormal year for game releases, as the pandemic changes how people buy and play games, but few could have predicted 2020’s winner. Jumping up from the rank 18 publisher of 2019, Sega has officially earned Metacritic’s reward for top publisher in 2020.
Metacritic takes into account a variety of different metrics in creating its list, all of which Sega performed excellently in. The biggest metric for Sega’s games were their overall scores and the percentage at which they were ranked “good.” There were 38 total products by Sega scored on Metacritic in 2020, with 28 of them being distinct games. Of those score products, 95 percent of them were scored as “good,” and 0 percent were bad.
The second metric worth calling attention to is Sega’s Average Metascore for 2020 releases. This number is apparently 81.6, which is impressive. However, Sega did not win overall in this specific metric. Annapurna Interactive scored an overall average of 81.9, just overtaking Sega. While Sega didn’t win this metric, it made up for the small disadvantage in other areas – though Annapurna notably ranked second in Metacritic’s top publishers of 2020 list.
Metacritic’s third key metric is a list of the publisher’s games that were rated “Great” in 2020, with Great meaning a 90 or higher Metacritic score. The two Sega-published games in 2020 that meet this standard were Persona 5 Royal on PS4 and Yakuza 0 on Xbox One. Yakuza 0 was originally released in 2015, but came to Xbox One this last year. That kind of contribution is why this is just one aspect of Metactritic’s overall method of ranking.
The final rankings were very close between Sega and Annapurna Interactive. Sega achieved a score of 327.2, while Annapurna’s final score is 322.9. While the average Metascore was likely the largest factor, Sega’s total number of game releases in 2020 was what appears to push the publisher to an overall victory.
Rounding out the top 10 are Capcom, Sony, Activision Blizzard, Microsoft, Aksys Games, No More Robots, Nintendo, and Devolver Digital. None of the top 10 publishers had a single badly scored product, though Devolver Digital’s average Metascore did fall below 75. Last year’s top publisher, 505 Games, stumbled down to 13th place on this year’s list. The list includes 48 different publishers for 2020, with Metacritic‘s only requirement being five distinct titles released throughout the year.
