Doom Eternal has just wrapped up the rebooted series’ story, the one that kicked off with Doom in 2016, but that doesn’t mean id Software is done with the series just yet.
In an interview with Polygon, Doom Eternal game director Hugo Martin has dropped some hints that the series could go on to cover more, untold stories in the future – and that the story of rebooted Doom, really, could only just be beginning.
“While this is the end of the story arc that began in Doom (2016), we planted a lot of stakes in the ground with that story,” Martin explains in the interview. “And we’ve been able to flesh out a lot of those things throughout the course of [Doom Eternal] and to do two DLCs.”
“[…] But there are more stories to tell with the Doom Slayer, for sure.”
Could these new stories the studio is planning even fold “a female Doom Slayer” into the series? It’s not a wholly new idea – we know the developer has tinkered with the idea before. It stands to reason that Martin and his team would want to incorporate something new in a whole new arc, after all… Martin has some ideas about what a future Doom game will focus on, already, it seems.
“Could we tell a story about when [the Doom Slayer] first came to that place with the Sentinels, almost like a more medieval setting, a fantasy setting? I think as you play the DLC, too, you’ll see lots of hints of what we could do moving forward.
“Maybe even in the future. Again, our hero is somewhat timeless — I mean, literally, he’s immortal. So we could tell all kinds of stories.”
The Ancient Gods – Part Two, the conclusion to the Doom Slayer’s Saga (for now, at least) launched on March 18 for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Stadia.
