Zack Snyder Wanted Daniel Day-Lewis To Play Zod In ‘Man Of Steel’

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is officially here, and barring the black and white version that has yet to release, Snyder’s particular vision for the DC Cinematic Universe is coming to a close. Still, there are still plenty of dedicated fans who loved Snyder’s superhero films and are always looking for more info about what could have been. So far, it seems the director has been happy to provide and recently dropped another interesting tidbit about his version of Superman, one that involves Daniel Day-Lewis.

Man of Steel was the introduction to this new and revamped Superman, and Snyder certainly had big plans for the character. In the very first film, Superman faced off against General Zod, played by Michael Shannon, a fellow Kryptonian who sought to conquer Earth and rebuild it into a new Krypton, sacrificing humanity in the process.

Henry Cavill’s Superman takes issue with this of course and the two throw down, eventually ending with the Man of Steel making the fateful choice to kill Zod in order to prevent him from doing any more damage. While Shannon was a good fit for the part, he apparently was not Snyder’s first choice for the big villain. During a recent interview with MTV News, Snyder revealed they initially had a particular actor they wanted to court: Academy Award winner Day-Lewis, who previously won separate Best Actor Oscars for his roles in My Left Foot, There Will Be Blood, and Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln.

Part of the reason the studio and director wanted Day-Lewis on board is the actor’s famous talent for blending seamlessly into just about any role. In fact, Snyder specifically called out his talent for playing a wide variety of characters while explaining why he wanted to cast him: “When you talk about Daniel Day-Lewis as an actor, he can play any part you want. So yeah, so we always, we did talk. We had hoped Daniel Day-Lewis would be interested in the movie.”

Wanting a particular actor isn’t the same thing as actually landing them, however, and Day-Lewis is no small fish. Day-Lewis is famously quite picky about what roles he will and won’t take, and he has both the reputation and skills to be choosy. For whatever reason, it would seem that he just wasn’t willing or able to take the role, and eventually, Michael Shannon took on the job.

It may have been for the best, given Shannon’s solid performance as the character, but it’s always interesting to ponder what could have been. An actor like Day-Lewis might have had a very different interpretation of the villain, which could’ve led to all sorts of interesting decisions. Just one more interesting fun-fact about the formation of the DC Cinematic Universe.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is now available on HBO Max.
