Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam has faced a few speed bumps along its way since its first inception, but it finally has an official release date. On his Instagram account, Johnson shared a video that confirms that fans will get to see the much-awaited flick on July 29, 2022.
The short clip shared by the actor begins with a shot of Times Square, the iconic tourist spot in New York. The multiple digital screens suddenly turn black, and the Black Adam logo shows up, followed by an ominous voice announcing that “the hierarchy of power in the DC Universe is about to change.” The release date is then flashed across the screens, confirming the film’s summer 2022 release.
With just a singular date flashing on the screens, it seems like Warner Bros. seems to be returning to the “only in theaters” route with Black Adam. In 2021, all of the studio conglomerate’s 17 projects are to be released on HBO Max simultaneously, being available on the streaming platform for a one-month exclusive window. However, it was recently confirmed that in 2022, Warner Bros. would not be continuing the same trend and will instead adopt a 45-day theatrical release window for their films.
Black Adam marks Johnson’s entry into the world of heroes. In the comics, the DC character is a wielder of powerful magic, and has had his moments of being both hero and villain over the years. Originally known as Mighty Adam, he was chosen by the wizard Shazam to be a hero and save humanity. But, after being corrupted by his own power, he is then exiled, only to return as Black Adam who is convinced that he is the true leader and often resorts to violence to protect his own interests. In the film, Johnson will be playing the powerful villain attempting to redeem himself and it remains to be seen whether there will be any crossovers with Shazam! in the future.
Following 2019’s Shazam!, Black Adam will be the second New Line/DC film. Production on the film is slated to begin in April and Johnson is already preparing for the role. However, Johnson first signed on to play Black Adam back in 2014. Shooting was initially scheduled to begin in 2020, but as with many other projects, it had to be delayed due to the pandemic. Warner Bros. later announced that the film had been removed from their 2020 calendar entirely, pushing production to 2021.
While the plot is majorly being kept under wraps, it has been confirmed that the film will introduce fans to the Justice Society of America, with actors already being brought on to portray the different members. Johnson’s Black Adam will be joined by Noah Centineo’s Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell’s Cyclone, Pierce Brosnan’s Doctor Fate, and Aldis Hodge’s Hawkman.
Black Adam is under production at Warner Bros. and will release in theaters on July 29, 2022.
