Activision shared the changes and additions coming to Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War as part of the game’s next update, dubbed Season Two Reloaded. Alongside the changes coming as part of the midseason update, Gunfight Tournaments will be making its long-awaited debut in Black Ops Cold War for the most competitive players to jump into.
Season Two of Cold War kicked off on Feb. 23, 2021, continuing the narrative journey of CIA Agent Russell Adler and the struggle for Verdansk in Warzone. Season Two included the reintroduction of popular multiplayer mode Gun Game, a new Zombies map, a new Warzone operator, two new weapons, a new map, and various other changes.
Gunfight Tournament serves as the latest multiplayer addition to Cold War, aiming to satiate the most competitive of Call of Duty’s multiplayer community. As part of the mode, teams of two will be able to enter tournaments where “teamwork and communication are a must” and teams will need to take six rounds on their way to tournament glory. Activision teased it would be offering “unique” in-game rewards to the teams who manage to take the day, though it has not teased what these rewards will be.
The competitive tournament was first introduced in late-2019 after the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The initial beta paired 32 players into 16 teams-of-two for the single-elimination tournament where winning teams advanced and the losing teams were sent packing to the lobby. The winning team received a special skin for the Desert Eagle, signifying their multiplayer mastery.
Gunfight Tournament would prove to be a success and it returned to Modern Warfare periodically over the next year for players to make a run at the special rewards awaiting potential winners.
The addition of Gunfight Tournament, and Season Two Reloaded as a whole, comes at a welcome time for players. Spring and summertime often prove to be tricky times for many live services games due to content droughts. This is due to developers trying to balance game and content updates while also trying to ramp up production on separate projects. Destiny fans are perhaps the most familiar with content droughts, as it has occurred several times over the game’s lifespan.
However, the Call of Duty franchise has the benefit of rotating studios working on a three-year cycle. This means Black Ops Cold War developer Treyarch is allowed to focus all its efforts on balancing the game and pushing out fresh content to satiate players. Meanwhile, Sledgehammer Games is currently hard at work on the latest entry in the Call of Duty series rumored to be heading back to World War 2.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season Two Reloaded will release to all active players on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on March 30, 2021.
