Grand strategy games are a niche genre already, but grand strategy games released on consoles are even more rare. Yet the Nobunaga’s Ambition franchise has proven that there’s still a place for that kind of game. The series has been around since the 1980s and doesn’t plan on going anywhere, as Koei Tecmo has officially announced the next major release in the Nobunaga’s Ambition franchise – Nobunaga’s Ambition: Rebirth.
Virtually nothing has been shared regarding Nobunaga’s Ambition: Rebirth at this point. There’s a short cinematic teaser trailer focusing on the character of Nobunaga himself, as well as the assumed cast of characters that will play a role in the game. A teaser website has also been created, though it features just a single piece of key art, the teaser trailer, and confirmation that Nobunaga’s Ambition: Rebirth is launching in 2021.
Otherwise, fans of Nobunaga’s Ambition will have to speculate about other details. For example, there are no confirmed platforms for the new game. Koei Tecmo‘s last release in the franchise, Nobunaga’s Ambition: Taishi, was released on PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Android devices. It would be surprising if Nobunaga’s Ambition: Rebirth expanded from those platforms, outside of a possible PS5 release.
While Nobunaga’s Ambition has been consistently iterated upon since it launched in the 80s, it’s still surprising to see another game coming in 2021. Koei Tecmo has dozens of recognizable franchises with theoretically more appeal than a grand strategy game. Yet it’s clear that Koei Tecmo’s team, as well as producer Kou Shibusawa, consider Nobunaga’s Ambition a priority. Fans of the franchise are certain to be appreciative.
