Microsoft Flight Simulator Mod Adds Stuck Suez Canal Ship

It is always interesting to see how the community comes up with mods to enhance a game. This time, a mod added to the Microsoft Flight Simulator has undoubtedly made the game more life-like. A player created a mod to add the cargo ship that has been stuck in the Suez canal for over a week. The mod caught the internet’s attention through a TikTok video showing the obstruction of the canal in the Flight Simulator.

This mod might seem small compared to other more complex ones that have been added to this installment. Some amazing mods for the 2020 edition of the Flight Simulator include a collection of 28 sci-fi ships which include the Millennium Falcon and the Enterprise. Other mods include the addition of Godzilla or the mod which adds buildings that look like the two major consoles: the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X.

In general, Microsoft Flight Simulator has striven to be as realistic as possible, both in the gameplay and in the scenery. This mod, released by user donut_enforcement, has made the game even closer to real life. The massive Ever Given cargo ship that has been stuck on the Suez canal since Tuesday has gained the world’s attention since it is blocking a major maritime route and, therefore, gravely affecting the world’s economy. The event has affected the world so much that it is understandable how someone would want to add the ship to reflect current events.

Even though the TikTok video showing off the mod was originally uploaded by donut_enforcement, the creator of the mod, it only got traction once it started being shared on Twitter. The TikTok was originally posted on Twitter by Mat Velloso who is the technical advisor to Satya Nadella, Microsoft’s CEO. The Flight Simulator video shows a pretty accurate depiction of the Suez canal from the plane’s window as the captain tells passengers to buckle up as the captain does a fly-around.

Unfortunately, players who want to see the Suez blockage on the Flight Simulator will have to mod their own games themselves. While it is technically possible that the game is updated with satellite images, it might be a while before we could see such changes, especially since Microsoft has been known to take a while when it comes to releasing Flight Simulator updates. On the other hand, there is no estimated date for the Ever Given cargo ship to be unstuck, so the update is theoretically possible.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available now on PC, with support for Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles planned for 2021.
