Developer San Diego Studio has routinely shown an attention to detail that is second to none, and the upcoming MLB The Show 21 looks like it will be illustrating this more than ever. For the past few weeks, SDS has been showing off new features that will be introduced to the game. From tightening up fielding mechanics to the addition of custom stadiums, this year’s version of the game is making a decent amount of improvements compared to most yearly sports games.
In addition to announcing new features, each of these presentations has been capped off by the reveal of a new baseball legend that is being added to the game. MLB The Show may be an excellent baseball simulation, but it also serves as a sort of interactive museum to baseball history. The recent trend of newly announced legends has shown that SDS is focused on bringing as many new faces to MLB The Show 21 as possible. These new additions are cause for excitement for many, and the sheer amount of legendary players through baseball’s history opens up near limitless possibilities.
Few players in baseball history have been as dominant with a bat in their hands as Hank Aaron. In his 23 seasons career, “Hammerin’ Hank” set numerous batting records, and the yearly hitting award that’s given to players each year is named in his honor. Putting Hank Aaron in MLB The Show 21 would likely make for one of the most powerful cards in the Diamond Dynasty mode, especially when it comes to his swing power. This would also be an opportunity to pay tribute to one of the most influential African-American players in baseball, as Aaron unfortunately passed away earlier this year.
Randy “The Big Unit” Johnson is one of the most legendary pitchers of the last thirty years. Over 22 seasons, Johnson was able to strikeout close to five-thousand batters, and he’s one of two pitchers to win the Cy Young award four years in a row. Considering the changes that MLB The Show 21 is making to pitching, Johnson would make a great addition for those looking to try out the new pinpoint pitching mechanic. His devastating slider and fastball combo would likely make him a favorite for online play.
It’s no secret that the New York Yankees have produced some of the greatest names in baseball. If MLB The Show 21 was going to add any of the team’s legends from the past twenty years, it would be remiss if it didn’t include Derek Jeter. From Rookie of the Year to World Series MVP awards, Jeter was one of the most electrifying players to watch during his career. If he made it to the game, it would be safe to assume that he would be one of the best shortstops available. It would also be exciting to see how his skills in MLB The Show 21 matched up with cover star Fernando Tatis Jr.
MLB The Show 21 is right around the corner, and San Diego Studio has been doing everything it can to drum up hype for the game. So far, it would be safe to say that SDS is succeeding, especially when it comes to the new legends announcements. Names like Roberto Clemente and Grady Sizemore have already been made official, and there’s only going to be more in future feature presentations. Until MLB The Show 21 comes out and rosters are made official, fans will just have to hope that their favorite classic players make it to the game.
