The Dragon Age series wouldn’t be the same without quality companions. Throughout all of the games, the protagonist is joined by several of them during their adventures. And the series excels at making it feel like players share real relationships with each one. The protagonist might become close friends with some, whereas they could share an uneasy alliance with others. It all depends on the player’s choices and how they treat them.
One way to increase a companion’s approval of the protagonist is to get them gifts. However, a wonderful present for a certain friend might be terrible for another. Therefore, here are the offerings that Dragon Age: Origins‘ stone-faced Sten appreciates the most.
6 Painting Of The Rebel Queen
There are several things about the Dragon Age world that most players don’t know. For instance, Sten has a soft spot for art. Most of the best gifts for the big man are paintings. This one depicts a battle between Orlais and Ferelden. The main subject is the redheaded Rebel Queen, who’s standing on top of a destroyed chariot holding her war flag.
To get the piece for the Qunari friend, players need to purchase it from Old Tegrin. The Merchant is only located on the Gentle Path, which players occasionally visit as part of a random encounter. It’ll set the protagonist back 14 silver and 40 bronze to acquire the picture – a small price to pay to begin a friendship.
5 Portrait Of A Goosegirl
“Portrait of a Goosegirl” sounds like an unusual painting of a human-goose hybrid. Unfortunately, though, that’s not the case. Instead, the artwork shows a girl and her windswept hair tending to a flock of geese. The only way to get the portrait is by buying it from Faryn in the Frostback Mountain Pass. He’s found outside of the entrance to Orzammar, and it’ll cost 13 silver and 20 bronze to get the desired item.
It’s not actually a bad price, considering the painting comes in a golden frame. Sadly, players can’t remove the expensive frame before giving the artwork to Sten. At least they get a nice trip to Frostback Mountain Pass, as while the second game has admittedly aged better in some aspects to its predecessor, the original still dominates when it comes to locations.
4 Silver-Framed Still Life
Another piece of art that can be picked up for Sten is the “Silver-Framed Still Life.” This one is the least action-packed painting of them all as it solely contains thirty-two identical porcelain tureens. Art connoisseurs from Orlais likely appreciate the meaning behind each one, and Sten is clearly the same as he’s happy to receive the piece.
First, though, it needs to be acquired. To do so, players must be on the upper floor of Redcliffe Castle. Up there will be a Vault, which holds the chest that needs to be looted. At least, players don’t have to spend hard-earned cash this time. Although, Redcliffe Castle is hardly the safest place to be.
3 Water-Stained Portrait
There are many mages in the Dragon Age world, and not all of them agree on the Circle of Magi. In fact, there’s a large debate on whether they’re morally just or not. However, one of the best ever moments in BioWare games is when the Warden visits the organization’s Circle Tower in Ferelden.
While there, players can go to the Senior Mage Quarters on the second level and find a charred corpse. By looting the body, they’ll find another portrait. This one is slightly water-stained and features a man wearing furs and a crown. Most people don’t tend to steal their presents from corpses. Yet, Sten still enjoys the dead person’s painting.
2 Totem
The Deep Roads are mostly known for containing an incredible amount of Darkspawn. But in Origins, they also house a nice gift for Sten. Players can find it in the Caridin’s Cross area inside a chest. It’s near where you fight some genlocks, beside a Ballista.
Surprisingly, the present isn’t a painting for once, proving that Sten has varied tastes. Although, the present could still be regarded as a piece of art because it’s a wooden totem with the shapes of monsters carved into it. It’s unclear if the item does anything magical, yet it helps grow the bond between the Warden and his Qunari ally. And what more could anyone want?
1 Sten’s Sword
Obtaining Sten’s sword takes a lot more work than acquiring the other gifts. For starters, his approval level needs to be at least 25, which can be achieved by fetching three of the other presents. Doing so will trigger a conversation with the Qunari, where he explains the importance of the weapon and how he lost it.
Then players can begin their companion quest to retrieve the blade. Sounds easy, but it ends up being a goose chase as the Warden and Sten try to track the thing down. Eventually, it’s found in a chest at Dwyn’s house in Redcliffe Village. Once the protagonist hands over the sword, Sten will be able to use it for the rest of the game and, as a result, be more useful against the stronger bosses. Plus, the Warden makes a good friend.
