Far Cry 6 May Be Too Similar to FC4 In One Big Way | Game Rant

Far Cry 6 will see players explore the fictional Caribbean island nation of Yara, and take part in a revolution against its iron-fisted dictator. That dictator is President Anton Castillo, played by Breaking Bad‘s Giancarlo Esposito. Anton is determined to crush the revolution, and is preparing his young son Diego to take over as president in the event of his death.

This villainous father-son dynamic and its relation to the game’s player character Dani Rojas may help Far Cry 6‘s story feel unique after so many installments of the series. However, there is one part of Far Cry 6 which could risk being extremely similar to a main plot point in Far Cry 4.

Far Cry 6‘s Yara is ruled over by Anton Castillo. Having witnessed the execution of his father by revolutionaries fifty years prior to the events of the game, Anton has come to believe that his family alone can restore Yara to the tropical paradise he believes it once was. Now, Anton’s regime has come under threat from a new revolutionary force which the protagonist will play a vital role in.

The Far Cry 6 website describes the political situation in Yara: “With each passing day, Anton and Diego’s power continues to grow, but the resistance remains divided and without unified leadership. The spark of revolution is in danger of being extinguished.” This sounds very similar to the depiction of the Golden Path in Far Cry 4.

The Golden Path is the revolutionary movement which hopes to bring down Kyrat’s ruler, Pagan Min. Just as Yara is loosely based on Cuba, Kyrat is based on Nepal and Tibet. The Golden Path is described as a “lumbering two-headed elephant” due to the growing division between its two leaders, Amita and Sabal. Amita is a ruthless pragmatist who believes in using Kyrat’s drug trade to help fund the revolution. In contrast, Sabal believes in the power of tradition, claiming that religion can be used to unite the people of Kyrat behind the Golden Path.

During the events of Far Cry 4, the revolutionary duo become increasingly disillusioned with the viewpoints of one another. The player eventually has to choose who to side with as the leader of the Golden Path. Whether they side with Amita or Sabal, their new leader will demand that Ajay kill the other. The player does not need to carry out these orders, but ultimately they still choose which direction the Golden Path’s leadership ends up going in.

The description of the revolutionaries on Far Cry 6‘s website may hint at a similar choice in the next game. Most of the focus of the marketing materials has been on Anton and Diego, with Dani Rojas getting little time in the limelight and few characters on the side of the revolution getting any description for now. Nonetheless, Dani’s involvement in the revolution and its lack of clear leadership makes a player decision about its direction seem likely.

This risks feeling like it retreads old ground from Far Cry 4. It is also possible for Ajay to find the leader they sided with in the game’s open world and kill them after making the decision. This means that even in the event that Dani simply becomes the leader of the Yaran revolutionaries themself, Far Cry 6‘s plot could still feel like it bears too many similarities to the plot of the fourth game. The exact role that Anton, Diego, and Dani will play in the story, however, has yet to be revealed. Many Far Cry fans will be hoping the Ubisoft explores a new dynamic and new kinds of moral choices in Far Cry 6.

Far Cry 6 is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
