Fortnite: Where Are the Raptors (And How to Tame Them)

The first major patch for Fortnite Chapter 2 Season 6 has arrived, fixing bugs, balancing weapons, and other usual things players have come to expect. However, there’s a new animal of the prehistoric variety arriving on the island with the 16.10 update, Raptors.

Epic Games’ popular free-to-play battle royale is entering its third week of Season 6. Dubbed “Primal,” the new season has seen many changes to Fortnite‘s meta, including the addition of various fauna (now including raptors,) a primal weapon crafting system, geographic alterations, and other somewhat divisive changes.

The latest Fortnite update makes good on the longstanding rumors that players would eventually see Raptors in-game. Teased within the first patch notes for Season 6, Fortnite is delivering on its promised, “apex predator” spawning on the island. Hatched from the dinosaur eggs players have found scattered across the map in recent weeks, the Raptors are by far the most lethal of Season 6’s new animals. It’ll serve players well to learn where these prehistoric beasts are located, and what to do should they encounter them.

As it’s been discovered with the rest of the wild animals, Raptors don’t always spawn in the same location every match. This means Fortnite players will need a degree of luck when searching around the island, as other players will likely be looking for them as well. Early reporting does indicate that the agile dinosaurs have a tendency to be found near the scattered dinosaur eggs players have been finding the past few weeks, so starting in one of those areas may be a good idea. Once a Raptor knows it has been spotted, it’ll emit a screech to call its fellow dinosaurs, so players will want to come well-equipped.

In addition to calling for backup, Raptors roam in pairs and will attack any player on-sight, dealing roughly 20-30 damage per strike. Thankfully, these “Primal” animals can be tamed in a similar fashion to wolves and boars, potentially giving players a huge advantage in late-stage matches. Here’s a quick rundown of the best way to go about it:

  • Eliminate a wild animal and pick up the meat they leave behind.
  • Find a Raptor near some hatched eggs. Raptors hunt in packs, so be prepared.
  • Throw the meat nearby and hide.
  • Once the Raptor is distracted by the meat, quickly approach it.
  • Hold down the interact button to “tame” the Raptor.

Alternatively, players can craft a Hunter’s Cloak rather than the meat to approach taming the dinosaur. For those unaware, the Hunter’s Cloak makes the user temporarily invisible to animals, making the task of taming significantly easier. However, players will need at least one meat and two animal bones to craft the item, so it isn’t necessarily the quickest method.

Fortnite is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
