Raf Grassetti, the art director for God of War, has revealed a new cover design, created for DC Comics and Scorpion Comics for a new Batman series. It isn’t uncommon for artists like Grassetti to step away from the day job for these types of projects, which can be great for fans to get a better view of the artists’ skill outside God of War.
This isn’t the first time that Grassetti has drawn a Batman cover, with a previous piece starring the Joker previously making headlines for an incredible new interpretation of the DC villain. It’s a big change from the aesthetic of God of War, both the original and the modern series, but still has the hallmarks of the particular artist’s style.
The cover itself is for Batman: The Detective #1, which appears to be a series about DC’s popular superhero being organized by Scorpion Comics. In the piece, Batman is seen in his iconic outfit, but has dropped the cape in favor of a coat that sports the batwing-inspired fringes that flap in the wind at the bottom. To top off the new look, the character is riding a motorcycle, which isn’t entirely new to the franchise, though it doesn’t appear to have the same bells and whistles that many of the more modern vehicles often have.
Given the color scheme and fabric design, this almost looks like the piece could be the God of War artist’s take on a Year-One Batman, a version of the character known for going out in less armor and taking beatings for it. If that is the case, then this new series by Scorpion Comics might have a chance to show off a side of Batman that fans don’t often see anymore. Regardless, this cover looks like exactly the type of thing that might draw eyes to the shelf when Batman: The Detective releases in April.
It’s always interesting to see an artist like Grassetti branch out from what most fans might recognize them for, such as when he reimagined the characters from Chrono Trigger recently. Seeing the range of someone known so well for their incredible work on a game like God of War goes to show the type of skill that goes into so many of these projects. Then, as a bonus, this early showing of the cover image is sure to get readers excited for what Scorpion Comics has planned for Batman as well.
