Minecraft Player Creates Replica of Hawaiian Islands Using NASA Data

The pandemic has canceled many peoples’ travel plans over just more than the last year. Thankfully, the always creative Minecraft community is here to help pick up the slack.

The Minecraft community is well known for producing some truly incredible creations with the game’s wide range of blocks. While every Minecraft player needs a house to survive the night, many players have repeatedly taken the game’s building to an entirely new level. Over the game’s lifespan, it has kept a dedicated community that keeps raising the bar for insane creations within the game.

Most recently, YouTuber Frank Cesco, who goes by the username fra 267 on the site, posted a video detailing and showing off a new map that he has created using NASA and other satellite data to accurately recreate the Hawaiian islands. The build is incredibly impressive and is not the first massive map creation for Cesco, who is also known for making a similar map that recreated all of Europe. The video goes into great detail about how the map was made, and the painstaking steps Cesco took to make sure the topography was as accurate as it could be. Such incredible accuracy and scale is a standout feature of many such builds, such as the map that recreated an entire city in Minecraft.

The map recreates the islands on a scale of 1:45, meaning that blocks, which usually are a cubic meter in dimension, are instead equal to 45 meters of real-world ground. However, the Y-axis scale of the map is slightly altered so that is actually built to 1:22 so that the map is longer and can be more fun to explore. These scales put the dimensions of the map at a staggering 16,663 by 10,567 blocks and makes it considerably more detailed than Cesco’s previous map of Europe, which was built at a smaller 1:230 scale. The video goes into plenty of detail showing just how accurate the build is and has plenty of great shots showcasing the map’s beauty. Even more impressive is that the build was pulled off without using any of the diverse selection of Minecraft mods that could have made the job easier.

The video also gives details on how to download the map for any viewers that want to see it for themselves. This has been one of the biggest boons to Minecraft‘s community, as players being able to download and take a look at all of the incredible builds being made makes them that much more interesting. Minecraft is also consistently being updated, adding new biomes, blocks, and creatures to be used in future builds, and with Minecraft‘s great community only getting bigger the future is bound to bring some incredible new builds like this one.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
